Tradução parcial comentada do estudo Emigrantes Deportados nos Açores

O ponto de partida para a presente dissertação de mestrado é a tradução de um relatório na área das Ciências Sociais que, apesar de ter sido traduzido na íntegra, é bastante extenso, tendo obrigado a um exercício de seleção de alguns capítulos representativos da diversidade de estilos que ali se podem encontrar. O trabalho de tradução tornou evidentes algumas necessidades: conhecer termos técnicos relativos à legislação em vigor em cada um dos países nele referidos, bem como termos médicos; encontrar simetrias de escolaridade entre os sistemas de ensino português, canadiano e norte-americano; importar para o texto de chegada paratextos como gráficos, tabelas e figuras com as respetivas legendas e procurar paralelos para expressões coloquiais. Acima de tudo, procurou-se desenvolver esta dissertação no respeito pelo desejável equilíbrio entre a teoria e a prática que deverá pautar quer a atividade de tradução quer a elaboração de um trabalho desta natureza. Assim sendo, uma vez identificado o propósito principal da versão traduzida – o de informar com eficiência imediata o público-alvo, em consonância com o primeiro propósito do texto-fonte – tornou-se necessário, em face desta prioridade, recorrer a um corpus selecionado de bibliografia teórica que pudesse ajudar nas escolhas e decisões inerentes à prática da tradução.

ABSTRACT: The starting point for this master´s dissertation is the translation of a report belonging to the academic field of the Social Sciences. The report, although translated in full, is quite extensive, thus leading to a selection of a few chapters, chosen according to their diversity in style, for the purpose of the current dissertation. The translation work made a few necessities obvious: to get acquainted with technical terms related to the current legislation in each of the mentioned countries, as well as medical terms; to find the schooling levels symmetry between Portugal, Canada and the United States; to import, to the target-text, paratexts such as graphics, tables and pictures with the respective captions, and find suitable parallels for colloquial expressions. Most of all, the goal was to carry out this dissertation without ever losing sight of the desirable balance between theory and practice that should affect both translation in general and the elaboration of a study such as this. Therefore, once the main purpose of the translated version was identified – to inform the target-public with maximum efficiency, as is the goal of the source text – it became necessary, in face of such a priority to fall back on a selected corpus of theoretical bibliography which could aid in the choices and decisions that are inherent to the practice of translation.
