Os hábitos de leitura dos estudantes do ensino básico da Região Autónoma dos Açores

Tendo como objetivo central o conhecimento dos hábitos de leitura dos alunos açorianos, descrevem-se, neste trabalho, as principais representações sobre as práticas individuais, numa apreensão sistematizada do gosto, da frequência e do interesse que a leitura desperta. O estudo reporta-se também à influência dos contextos promotores de leitura, como a família, o grupo de pares e a escola, enquanto agentes fundamentais na reconfiguração e promoção dos hábitos dos leitores em formação. Para além disso, abordam-se questões atuais que se prendem com o uso das TIC. Paralelamente, a pesquisa, que se suporta num vasto conjunto de referências teóricas e de resultados de outras investigações realizadas em Portugal e no estrangeiro, estabelece comparações entre as várias ilhas dos Açores e relaciona os hábitos de leitura dos açorianos com os seus colegas do continente português. Este trabalho reúne os dados recolhidos através da aplicação de um questionário a cerca de 1600 estudantes, matriculados no ano letivo de 2010/2011, nos 1.º, 2.º e 3.º ciclos do Ensino Básico, nas escolas da Região Autónoma dos Açores. Contrariando a ideia de que os alunos se afastam cada vez mais da leitura, o estudo mostra que as crianças e jovens investigados mantêm hábitos leitorais satisfatórios, muito embora haja um longo caminho a percorrer, no sentido de tornar o ato de ler numa prática mais abrangente, mais regular e mais duradoura. Apesar dos constrangimentos impostos pela intromissão em áreas adstritas ao campo dos interesses e dos gostos individuais, estímulos de difícil quantificação, esta investigação contribui para o conhecimento da realidade, apontando algumas sugestões e implicações práticas que poderão sustentar a tomada de medidas necessárias ao reforço dos hábitos de leitura da população estudantil, principalmente dos grupos que apresentam mais dificuldades e desmotivação.

ABSTRACT: Focusing on the main goal of learning about the reading habits of the Azorean students, the main representations of individual practices are described, in a systematic apprehension of the liking, frequency and interest aroused by reading. The study also refers to the influence of contexts, through the quantitative analysis of the results about aspects related to the role of the family, peer group and school as key agents to the reset and promotion of the training readers’ habits. Besides this, present issues linked to the use of Information and Communication Technologies are also approached. The research, which is grounded in a vast set of theoretical references and other research carried out in Portugal and abroad, establishes connections among the several islands of the Azores and compares reading habits of the Azorean students and their mates in the Portuguese mainland. This work gathers data collected through the use of a questionnaire to around 1600 students enrolled in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd educational cycles (school year 2010/2011) in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Opposing the idea that nowadays students are getting away and away from reading, the study shows that the herewith covered children and youths keep satisfactory reading habits, although there is still a long path to go in order to raise the figures into higher standards, therefore turning the act of reading into a broader, more regular and longer lasting practice. In spite of the constraints imposed by the intrusion in attached areas to the scope of interests and individual likes, which are incentives of difficult quantification, this study in contributes to the knowledge of reality. It points out some suggestions and practical implications which may support decision-making related to the enhancement of reading habits in the student universe, particularly those groups who present more difficulties or demotivation.
