Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2016-08 Art museums are moving increasingly toward community and experience-based practices and away from traditional modes of operating. This research explores change at an art museum through the lens of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), specifically as it relates to the education department. By employing a multi-level look at the contradictions that lie beneath the activity system, this research demonstrates how tensions in the system can aggravate those contradictions and lead to or inhibit change. In addition, this research explores the extent to which educators can become organizational change agents through their work. |
