Democratic Stability through the Concept of Reasonableness in John Rawls

The paper addresses the question of the stability of a democratic state and shows the shortcomings of the political and institutional structure for this purpose. It argues for the need of an additional factor of reasonableness as defined by John Rawls. We reflect on its articulation with rationality, its role regarding laws and the areas where its presence is crucial to the health and maintenance of a democratic political society. The analysis concludes by justifying the instrumental need of such faculty in the political arena as well as vindicating it as a mandatory civic duty.

El trabajo aborda la cuestión de la estabilidad de un Estado democrático y muestra las insuficiencias de la estructura político-institucional a tal efecto. Se argumenta por la necesidad del factor complementario de la razonabilidad tal y como la define John Rawls. Se reflexiona sobre su articulación con la racionalidad, el papel que juega con relación a las leyes y las áreas donde su presencia es determinante para la salud y mantenimiento de una sociedad política democrática. El recorrido concluye afirmando la necesidad instrumental de dicha facultad en el ámbito político y justificando su exigencia como un deber cívico.
