Citizen science is lately increasing in popularity as a new method of engagement of the cultural institutions with the general public. It allows unprofessional researchers to conduct activities which help research work coordinated by academics. This paper introduces the domain of citizen science and explores its use by cultural institutions. Based on the outcome of user studies within the Civic Epistemologies project it provides evidence on the need to offer educational activities for the staff of cultural institutions, in particular in the areas of communication with citizen organisations and organising specialised events.
