Part 2 is a free rendering of Marco Girolamo Vida's poem "Scacchia ludus". cf. Linde, Gesch. u. lit. d. schachspiels, vol. II, p. 268. According to Brit. mus. Catalogue, pt. [1] is merely an abridgment of Rowbothum's translation of Damiano da Odemira's "Libro da imparare giocare a scachi", published at London, 1562, under the title "The pleasaunt and wittie play of te cheasts renewed ... Lately translated out of Italien into Frenche [by Claude Gruget] and now set forth in Englische". The date of this reprint has been variously cited as 1806, 1809, and 1810. Ascribed by Brunet, Graesse, and Lowndes to G. Blochimo. Title within ornamental border. [pt. 1] To the reader greeting (signed: G.B.)
