Pages [39] and [58] misnumbered 33 and 48 respectively. First published by E. Newbery in 1787. Woodcut illustrations are by John Bewick, not Thomas, to whom they are frequently ascribed; they first appeared in the E. Newbery edition of 1792. According to S. Roscoe (John Newbery J25), Richard Johnson "had a hand in this production, but exactly how or what is uncertain." Possibly he served as translator; the work is attributed in a booklist in Newbery's The Oriental moralist to a Rev. Mr. Cooper, believed by some to be a pseudonym of Johnson's. Authorship attributed in preface. Moon, M. J. Harris's books Gumuchian Mode of access: Internet. |
