An additional plate is a photograph from a plate in the British Museum copy. A three-page, anonymous, handwritten note is included describing the work as follows: "Small folio. Original boards. ... A book of the very utmost rarity. Apparently very few other copies are recorded." Citation from Nagler, Künstler-Lexicon X.281. "The drawings in question were apparently purchased by De Rossi in Padua and given to the artist's father. They are typical and beautiful examples of Mantegna's art. ... The Print Room of the British Museum possesses a set of ten plates, which are evidently later impressions, as they have both numbers and inscriptions..." Engraved dedication from Novelli to Giambattista de Rubeis. Engraved t.-p., with bust of Mantegna; bust includes bits of information on Mantegna as though engraved on the pedestal. This figure is repeated without text as the first plate. Engraved by Francesco Novelli. Mode of access: Internet. |
