The goal of the Tree City USA Program and the IDNR Urban and Community Forestry Program is to encourage local communities to establish and uphold local community forestry programs for the purpose of citizen safety and community forest management. "The program is annually sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Department of Natural Resources - Urban and Community Forestry Program, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S.D.A.
