Frontispiece port. of Browne engraved by Arnold de Jode after a painting by Jacob Huysmans. All but 2 plates signed by de Jode as engraver. Eighteen were engraved in reverse after ill. in Abraham Bloemaert's Oorspronkelyk en vermaard konstryk tekenboek. Designers of the other plates are given as: E. Fiolet (Odoardo Fialetti), A. Carats (Agostino Carracci), L. Carats (Lodovico Carracci), I. Collenbina (Gasparo Colombina), I. Palma (Palma il Giovane? [Iacopo Palma]), F. Parmesan (Parmigianino [Francesco Mazzuoli]), and G.R.

"Ars pictoria" section in part a reworking of Browne's The whole art of drawing, painting, limning, and etching ... originally invented and written by the famous Italian painter Odoardo Fialetti (London, 1660).

First published 1669. Text pages as in that ed., with new t.p. printed red & black. Second state, with dedication to the painter Peter Lely cancelling that to Sir William Ducie. New to this ed. is "An appendix to the art of painting in miniture [sic] or limning ... never published before, by Alexander Browne." It has a special t.p. and is separately paged but continuously signed.
