Resumo

Signatures: A-K⁴.

Title placed within an elaborate architectural border with two terms. It incorporates the arms of Léonor Chabot, comte de Charny, to whom the work is dedicated. Near the top of the border is the date 1571, not 157 as in the copy described by Mortimer. The 18 pairs of woodcut male and female terms appear on the 2nd & 3rd and the 6th & 7th pages of the 8-page gatherings. Letterpress explanations follow each pair on the 4th and 8th pages, while the 1st and 5th pages are blank except for headlines and signatures. Head and tail pieces. One criblé initial.

"Imprimé à Lyon par Iean Marcorelle. 1572"--Colophon.

Mortimer, R. French 16th-cent.,

Mode of access: Internet.

Getty copy has pencil drawing of a rosette at lower right-hand corner of C4r, and a pencilled architectural section on F4r.

Binding: modern mottled goatskin, tooled in blind with fillets to form a panel design and embellished with fleurons. Title and author in gilt on spine.

On F1v of the Getty copy, the woodcut ill. of the 10th term is printed over a blind impression of the headpiece and letterpress text of the description of the 11th term from F4v.

The Getty copy shows from one to five indistinct impressions in blind of squarish stamps, about 1.9 x 1.7 cm., on the first leaf of gatherings B-K and usually on the third or fourth leaf as well.

In the Getty copy as in the copy described by Mortimer, the author's first name is spelled correctly "Hugues" on the t.p., rather than "Huges," and the word "l'Agriculture" has been corrected to "l'Architecture" by means of a printed cancel slip on D4v. The Getty copy does not appear to have been signed by stamping with pieces of type, as Mortimer reports, but there are similar blind impressions of the signature letter on the 3rd leaves of gatherings C-I.
