A discussion about French and English contention over this island of strategic and commercial importance until the siege of Louisburg in 1745 when the English gained temporary supremacy. The descriptive part is taken from Charlevoix's Histoire et description générale de la Nouvelle France. The maps bear titles: "Map of the island of Cape Breton as laid down by the Sieur Bellin, 1746" and "A map of North America as far as relates to the English settlements, taken from the Sieur Bellin, 1746."
