Resumo

Collection consists mainly of correspondence among family members and includes courtship correspondence of J. Doddridge to Julia, 1868-1875, and of Elsa and her future husband, Courtenay Hemenway, 1908-1912. Also included are photographs, genealogical material, a diary, commonplace and wedding books.

Mary (Gardner) Marshall graduated from Radcliffe College (A.B. 1925, A.M. 1926). During her college years she worked for J. Doddridge Brannan, Bussey Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She later became a close personal friend of the family and inherited Rockledge, the family summer home in Biddeford Pool, Me., where the papers were found. Family members represented in the collection include Elizabeth (Hammond) Gorham; her daughter and son-in-law, Julia Gardiner (Gorham) Brannan and J. Doddridge Brannan; her sister Ellen Hammond; and her grandchildren Frank Brannan and Elizabeth ("Elsa") (Brannan) Hemenway.
