Resumo

Diary concerning chiefly religious matters, mostly Puritanical confessions of Tompson's piety not living up to the expectation of the Lord. There is also mention of the many afflictions God is "pleased" to bestow upon Tompson's wife.

The diary also includes 12 poems by Tompson's brother, Benjamin Tompson; John Wilson; Samuel Danforth; Samuel Torrey; and, presumably, Anna Hayden.

Autograph manuscript, signed; dated consistently 1666-1679, with the 1723 entries on the back flyleaf and the 1726 entries on the front flyleaf and first two leaves.

Bound in calf with loose materials in a protective case.

Tompson was born in Braintree, Mass. and worked as a minister in Billerica.

The poems are published in: Kenneth B. Murdock, Handkerchiefs from Paul (Cambridge, 1927)
