This one-page undated and unattributed document contains a handwritten copy of the Latin inscription made for Jonathan Remington's gravestone. Paper and handwriting indicate the copy was probably made ca. 1800. Title transcribed from document verso. Jonathan Remington (1677-1745), a Harvard tutor and later a judge, was born on July 27, 1677 in Cambridge, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1696 and an AM in 1699. In 1703, Harvard selected Remington as a tutor and Fellow of the College and he served there until 1711 when he began to practice law. Remington was first appointed a judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1715, and in 1725, was appointed a Middlesex Probate Court judge. Remington died on September 30, 1745 and is buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the tomb of his cousin, Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757). |
