Resumo

Sewn notebook containing a forty-six page handwritten sermon composed by David Tappan based on the Biblical text Isaiah 65: 17, 18 and the subject of redemption. Tappan delivered the sermon multiple times as evidenced by the note on the first page, "March 11, 18, 25 Spring April 1781 Frisbee July 1782, Byfield July 1783, Lynn, Kimball. Dr. Huntington, Deerfield, French, Merrill, Dana."

Title supplied by cataloger. Received in the Harvard College Library on August 2, 1916 from Professor Edward C. Moore of Cambridge, Mass.

David Tappan (1752-1803), the third Hollis Professor of Divinity, was born in Manchester, Mass. on April 23, 1752. He received an AB from Harvard in 1771, an AM in 1774, and an STD in 1794. He also received an honorary AM from Dartmouth College in 1786. Tappan was ordained as the minister of Third Parish of Newbury, Mass. on April 18, 1774, and preached there until his appointment as the third Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard in 1792. Tappan died on August 27, 1803.
