Sixteen-page paper notebook containing a handwritten copy of an essay titled "An Oration upon Genius" composed by AM candidate Joseph Perkins for the 1797 Harvard Commencement. The verso of the last page contains the handwritten title: "Oration on Genius first Copy. July 17th Commencement 1797." The essay discusses themes of republicanism and education and begins, "To mark the peculiar operation of liberty on mental exertion and improvement..." Received in the Harvard University Library on March 25, 1946 from Dr. James S. Reeve of Appleton, Wisconsin. Joseph Perkins (1772-1803), an attorney in Salem, Mass., was born on July 8, 1772 in Essex, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1794 and an AM in 1797. Perkins's 1794 Harvard Commencement address, "An Oration on Eloquence," was printed that year as a pamphlet by Weld and Greenough, and his 1797 Commencement address, "An Oration upon Genius," was printed by Manning & Loring. Perkins was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1797, and in 1801, he was appointed Essex County Attorney. Perkins died on February 28, 1803.
