Unattributed and undated handwritten Latin valedictory oration likely composed by graduate Stephen Hooper for the 1761 Harvard College Commencement. In the oration, Hooper praises Massachusetts Governor Francis Bernard, Thomas Hutchinson, Professor Edward Wigglesworth, and Tutor Belcher Hancock. The oration mentions classmate John Chipman (1745-1761) who died of illness on April 15, 1761. Title supplied by cataloger. Received in the Harvard College Library on April 6, 1937 from Hamilton V. Bail of Jersey City, New Jersey. Stephen Hooper (1741-1802), a Massachusetts merchant, was born on July 3, 1741 in Marblehead, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1761 and an AM in 1764. Hooper was a successful merchant in Newburyport, Mass., and was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Newburyport in 1775. Hooper died on January 16, 1802. |
