Resumo

This small notebook with marbled paper covers contains three Latin addresses delivered by Adam Winthrop during Harvard College ceremonies: the valedictory oration on Class Day, 1724, the "Oratio Salutatoria" at the 1724 Commencement, and the "Oratio Gratulatoria" which closed the exercises of the 1727 Commencement. The last page of the volume is signed "Adam Winthrop Jun'r."

Received in the Harvard College Library on October 21, 1936 with Peabody Funds.

Adam Winthrop (1706-1744) was born on August 12, 1706 in Boston. He received an AB from Harvard in 1724, and an AM in 1727. Winthrop was involved in managing the Pemaquid, Maine land claims of his father Judge Adam Winthrop (Harvard AB 1694), and appears to have serked as a clerk of the Suffolk Court of Common Pleas. He was disgraced in the early 1740s when he used funds accessible to him as the treasurer of the American Commissioners for the Society for Promoting the Gospel in New England and Parts Adjacent to pay his own debts. Winthrop died on December 12, 1744.
