The volume was donated to the Harvard College Library by Grosvenor Hubbard on December 16, 1909. Hubbard was Trumbull's great-great-grandson. The letter of donation is tipped in the front of the book.

Jonathan Trumbull, Connecticut governor from 1769 until 1785, was born in Lebanon, Conn. on October 17, 1710. He received an AB from Harvard in 1727 and an AM in 1730. Trumbull studied for the ministry, but turned to trade after the death of his brother. He formed the trading house of Trumble, Pitkin, and Williams, and became a leading figure in Connecticut politics. Trumbull served as governor of Connecticut from 1769 until his death on August 17, 1785.

The undergraduate students of Harvard College followed a structured program of study in the early 1700s. Certain key texts were adopted as textbooks at Harvard, and students often copied them into personal notebooks in place of purchased books. Textbooks created by Harvard Tutors Henry Flynt and William Brattle, Instructor Judah Monis, and Fellow Charles Morton were among the earliest used in the colonies.
