Resumo

Forty-six-page notebook in modern hardcover binding containing John Leverett's edited version of Henry More's "Enchiridion ethicum" transcribed in Latin in 1694. The last page of the document includes entries in Leverett's hands: "Colom // January 17 1690/1," "Winth // January 31 1692/3", and "Vaug // Marty 10 1695/6." The inscriptions and notes likely refer to Benjamin Colman (Harvard AB 1692), Adam Winthrop (Harvard AB 1694), and George Vaughn (Harvard AB 1696).

Received in the Harvard College Library on July 17, 1929 from Samuel Merrill of Cambridge.

Flyleaf inscriptions: "James Cushing 1726," and "Thomas Symmes[?]...hune librum vindic[?]...Novimb: 20 169[?]." The inscriptions and notes likely refer to James Cushing (Harvard AB 1725) and Thomas Symmes (Harvard AB 1698).

Henry More (1614-1687) was an English philosopher. He was educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and served as a fellow there. Among his philosophical works, More wrote “Enchiridion Ethicum” in 1667, and both Harvard Tutor William Brattle and John Leverett created abstracts of the text that were copied by Harvard students into the 18th century.

John Leverett (1662-1724) was the first lawyer and jurist to become Harvard College president. He received an AB from Harvard in 1680 and an AM in 1683. Leverett served as a College Fellow from 1685 to 1700, and was Harvard's President from January 14, 1707/08 to May 3, 1724. He is recognized for his efforts in transforming Harvard College from a divinity school into a secular institution.
