Jay's Treaty was negotiated by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay and signed on 19 Nov. 1794. It stipulated that Britain would leave western posts by 1 June 1796; that lands on either side of the border, as well as that of the Mississippi River would be open to both countries; and that American shipping would not be hindered in trade with British possessions. A commission was established to settle debts to Britain and outstanding boundary problems.

The donor Christopher Gore served as member on the commission and wrote numerous opinions contained in these volumes.
