On December 17 came into force on community standard marine fuels.The SOx emissions will be increased in the main shipping routes at a rate of 3 to 4% annually. Most of the sulphur burden will be attributed to shipping activity. Therefore the extension of SECAs could be beneficial towards the improvement of air quality. This paper begins with a review of the current situation SECAS and ECAS areas, highlighting the rules to be implemented shortly.
