Resumo

This paper reports a study, which set out to identify what a group of community leaders believed about the purposes of science in the compulsory years of schooling. The sampling procedure used generated an interesting group of people who have some valuable insights, based on their own life experiences, to contribute to discussion of school science. The paper introduces some of these people to the reader and shares the insights the authors gained from the opportunity to talk with these people.<br />
