Risk assessment tool for radical technologies – Case Technology A and Technology B

Työssä testataan radikaalien teknologioiden liiketoimintariskien evaluointityökalua. Työn teoreettinen tausta koostuu teknologia- ja innovaatioteorioista hyödyntäen myös resurssipohjaista yritysteoriaa täydennettynä evolutionäärisellä teorialla. Teoreettisessa osuudessa rakennetaan viitekehys, jolla liiketoimintariskejä voidaan arvioida ja muodostaa riskiprofiili. Liiketoimintariskien muuttujina ovat markkina-, teknologia- ja organisaatioriskit. Primäärisenä tietolähteenä käytettiin teema- ja strukturoituja haastatteluita. Ensimmäinen haastattelu käsitti evaluointityökalun käytettävyyttä ja riskienhallintaa yleensä. Loput haastattelut liittyivät teknologian A ja teknologian B liiketoimintariskien arvioimiseen. Tulokset osoittavat molemmat teknologiat sisältävän radikaaleille teknologioille ominaisia epävarmuustekijöitä. Riskiprofiilin hyödyllisyys liittyy liiketoimintariskien samanaikaiseen havaitsemiseen auttaen näin päätöksenteossa. Tärkeää evaluoinnissa on kiinnittää huomiota näkökulmaan, josta riskejä tarkastellaan riskiprofiilin validiteetin parantamiseksi.

This study tests the risk assessment tool for radical technologies concerning business risks. The theoretical background for the study consists of the theories on the nature of technology and innovations and the risk management utilizing the resource-based view of the firm with characteristics of evolutionary theory. The literature review builds up a propositional framework for evaluating the business risks and forming the risk profile. The variables of business risks are proposed organizational-, market- and technology risks. The interviews of individuals were used as a primary source of information. The first interview concerned only the usability of risk assessment tool and risk management in general. The last four interviews involved the potential business risks related to technology A and technology B. The results indicate that both technologies contain uncertain features of radical technologies. The usability of risk profile is to provide many-sided classification of the business risks at the same time and therefore, it supports the decision-making process in the company. However, it is important to clarify from which point of view the sources of risk are evaluated to improve the risk profile’s validity.
