Remote File Access with Wireless Symbian Devices

Erilaisten langattomien päätelaitteiden kuten älypuhelimien ja kommunikaattoreiden määrän lisääntyessä myös kiinnostus liikkuville käyttäjille lisäarvoa tuottavia verkkopalveluita ja -sovelluksia kohtaan kasvaa. Työn tarkoituksena oli tutkia kuinka langattomat Symbianin käyttöjärjestelmää käyttävät laitteet voivat hyödyntää verkkotiedostoja. Työssä arvioitiin eri tiedostojenjakoprotokollien käytettävyyttä langattomissa verkoissa, määriteltiin etätiedostoyhteyden Symbian-alustalle tarjoavan ohjelmiston vaatimukset ja tehtiin alustava suunnitelma ohjelmiston toteuttamiseksi. Läpinäkyvä tiedostojen etäkäyttö vaatii tiedostojenjakoprotokollan toteuttamista sovelluksille yhteisen tiedostosaantimekanismin alle. Tiedostojen etäkäyttö voi perustua eri tiedostojenjakoprotokolliin kuten IP:n päällä toimiviin NFS:ään tai CIFS:ään. Langattomuuden aiheuttamat rajoitukset laitteissa ja tiedonsiirrossa saattavat vähentää sovellutuksen käytettävyyttä ja on huomioitava ohjelmistoa toteutettaessa. Symbian-alusta perustuu asiakas-palvelin arkkitehtuuriin, jossa asiakassovellukset käyttävät tiedostopalveluita yhteisen tiedostopalvelimen kautta. Etätiedostoyhteys on mahdollista toteuttaa liittämällä uusi kirjastomoduuli tiedostopalvelimeen. Protokollan toteuttavan moduulin on muunnettava protokollan viestit tiedostopalvelimelle sopiviksi huolehtien samalla muista samanaikaisista tiedostotapahtumista. Suunniteltu moduulin arkkitehtuuri mahdollistaa eri protokollavaihtoehtojen käyttämisen etätiedostoyhteyden toteuttamiseen.

As the amount of different advanced wireless devices such as smartphones and communicators increases also the interest for network services and applications providing added value for mobile users grows. The objective of this work was to study how wireless devices using Symbian's operating system can access network files. The suitability of different file sharing protocols in wireless environment was evaluated. In addition, requirements of the remote file access software were analysed and a preliminary software design was specified for the Symbian platform. To provide a transparent remote file access for applications a file sharing protocol must be implemented under a common file access mechanism. The remote file access can be based on different file sharing protocols such as NFS or CIFS operating over IP. Different hardware and wireless communication restrictions can decrease the fea-sibility of the application and should be considered when implementing software. The Symbian platform is based on a client-server architecture where client applications can access file services through the common file server. Remote file access can be implemented by installing a new library module into the file server. The module must convert file sharing protocol's messages into the file server compatible form while enabling other simultaneous file events. The designed architecture of the module makes possible to use different protocols in the implementation of the remote file access.
