The Future of Mobile Services and Wireless Applications in the Finnish Healthcare Sector

Työn päätavoitteena oli tutkia mobiilipalveluita ja langattomia sovelluksia Suomen terveydenhuollon sektorilla. Tutkimus havainnollistaa avain-alueita, missä mobiilipalvelut ja langattomat sovellukset voivat antaa lisäarvoa perinteiseen lääketieteen harjoittamiseen, ja selvittää, mitkä ovat tähän kehitykseen liittyvät suurimmat ongelmat ja uhkat sekä tutkimustuloksiin pohjautuvat mahdolliset palvelut ja sovellukset 5-10 vuoden kuluttua. Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen ja tutkimuksen toteuttamiseen valittiin tulevaisuudentutkimus ja erityisesti yksi sen menetelmistä, delfoi-menetelmä. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin kahdelta puolistrukturoidulta haastattelukierrokselta. Työn empiirinen osuus keskittyi kuvailemaan Suomen terveydenhuollon sektoria, siinä meneillään olevia projekteja sekä teknisiä esteitä. Lisäksi pyrittiin vastaamaan tutkimuksen pääkysymykseen. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että tärkeät alueet, joihin langaton kommunikaatio tulisi vaikuttamaan merkittävästi, ovat ensiaputoiminta, kroonisten potilaiden etämonitorointi, välineiden kehittäminen langattomaan kommunikaatioon kotihoidon parantamiseksi ja uusien toimintamallien luomiseksi sekä lääketieteellinen yhteistyö jakamalla terveydenhuoltoon liittyvät informaation lähteet. Työn tulosten perusteellavoitiin antaa myös muutamia toimenpide-ehdotuksia jatkotutkimuksia varten.

The main object of the thesis was to study the mobile services and wireless applications in the Finnish healthcare sector. The study illustrates the key areas where mobile services and wireless applications could add value to the traditional way of medical practice, and what the major problems and threats associated with this development are, and furthermore, potential services and applications based on research results in five to ten years time. The research approach was qualitative and for implementation of this study the futures studies and especially one of its methods, the Delphi method of experts, was chosen. The data of the study was collected from two open-ended interview rounds. The empirical part of the study concentrated on describing the Finnish healthcare sector, its on-going projects and technical barriers, and further, finding results to the main question. The end results show that the important areas, in which wireless communications are likely to have a significant impact, are those of pre-hospital health emergencies, remote monitoring of patients with chronic conditions, development of tools for wireless communications in order to improve home care services and creating new models of operation and medical collaboration through sharing of health-relatedinformation resources. Based on the results of the study, few aspects were given for further research.
