Application Architecture Design for an Industrial Service Company

Työssä oli tavoitteena suunnitella globaali sovellusarkkitehtuuri, joka ohjaa teollisen huoltoyrityksen sovellusten kehitystyötä. Sovellusarkkitehtuuri kuvaa tietokoneohjelmien toiminnallisuuteen loppukäyttäjien näkökulmasta ja sen laatiminen on osa strategista tietojärjestelmäsuunnittelua. Arkkitehtuurin tehtävänä on varmistaa, että tietojärjestelmät suunnitellaan kokonaisuutena tukemaan organisaation toimintaa. Arkkitehtuurin tekemistä ohjasi strategisen tietojärjestelmäsuunnittelun periatteet ja mallit. Tekniikat olivat samoja kuin projektikohtaisessa tietojärjestelmäsuunnittelussa. Sovellusarkkitehtuurin tekeminen alkoi tutustumalla yrityksessä vallitsevaan tilanteeseen sekä liiketoiminta- ja tietotekniikkastrategioihin. Tarkastelun kohteena olivat pääasiassa liiketoimintaprosessit ja käytössä olevat sovellukset. Tutustuminen tapahtui lähinnä haastatteluin ja dokumentteihin tutustumalla. Seuraavaksi johdettiin vaatimukset tulevaisuuden sovelluksille haastatteluista ja edellisen vaiheen materiaalin perusteella. Liiketoiminnan kannalta tärkeimmät vaatimukset valittiin täytettäväksi arkkitehtuurilla. Varsinaisen arkitehtuurin tekeminen oli lähinnä sovellusten valitsemisesta ja niiden keskinäisten suhteiden määrittelyä. Arkkitehtuurin perusteella määritettiin kehityshankeet.

The objective of the study was to design a global application architecture that guides the development of the information systems in an industrial service company. Application architecture concentrates on application software, which represents the functionality of information systems from the end-user's point of view. The designing is a part of strategic information system planning. The architecture aims at ensuring that the information systems are built as an entity. On the other hand, the architecture delineates the planned state of applications - a vision. The designing was guided by the models and principles of strategic information system planning. The practical techniques were same as the ones employed in traditional system engineering. The designing of the application architecture began by familarising with the existing business processes and applications besides the company's strategies. Interviews and record inspections were used for obtaining the information. The next step was the gathering of the requirements. The requirements were derived from the interviews and from the material collected previously. The most important requirements were selected to be covered with the architecture. The actual designing of the application architecture included the selection of the applications and the definition of the roles of the applications. Some concrete actions, which are due to the architecture, were stated.
