Implementing the Product Configurator in a Large Manufacturing Company

Työn tavoitteena on kuvata hissin ovien tuotekonfigurointiprosessia sekä SAP R/3 tuotekonfiguraattorin käyttöönoton aiheuttamia vaikutuksia. Työssä kuvataan myös uuden tuotekonfiguraattorin kehitystä, testausta, käyttöönottoa sekä pitkäaikaishallintaa. Tuotekonfigurointi on tehokas tapa toteuttaa massaräätälöintiä. Sen tarkoituksena on yhdistää massatuotannon ja asiakaskohtaisen tuotannon etuja tarjoamalla asiakkaille räätälöityjä, esisuunniteltuihin komponentteihin ja ennalta määrättyyn konfigurointimalliin perustuvia tuotteita. Näitä tuotteita tuotetaan konfigurointiprosessissa. Tämä prosessi voi olla erittäin monimutkainen ja altis virheille, joten sen tueksi on kehitetty tuotekonfiguraattoreita. Tuotekonfiguraattorit voivat tehostaa konfigurointiprosessia merkittävästi. KONE on valmistanut konfiguroitavia tuotteita useita vuosikymmeniä ja se on käyttänyt prosessien tukemiseen useita eri konfiguraattoreita. Näin ollen uuden konfiguraattorin käyttöönoton vaikutusten ei oleteta olevan niin dramaattisia kuin otettaessa konfiguraattoria käyttöön ensimmäisen kerran. Uudella konfiguraattorilla on kuitenkin useita vaikutuksia tuotteen hallintaan, konfigurointiprosessiin, tietojärjestelmiin, alihankkijoihin sekä asiakkaisiin. The objective of this Thesis is to describe how the product configuration process works at the elevator door factory and how the SAP R/3 Variant Configurator implementation will affect this process. The Thesis also describes the development, testing, implementation and long-term management of the Variant Configurator. Product configuration is an effective way to implement mass customisation. The purpose is to combine the benefits of economies of scale and economies of scope. This is done by providing configurable products, which are adapted to the needs of a particular customer in a configuration process using pre-designed components and a pre-defined configuration model. The configuration process can be very complex and liable to mistakes. Product configurators as a support tool can make this process more efficient. KONE has had configurable products for decades and it has used product configurators for a long time. This is why the effects of the Variant Configurator are not expected to be very dramatic. However, it has several effects on the product management, configuration process, information systems, suppliers and customers. These effects are emphasized by the fact that the configurator implementation is connected to the ERP implementation.
