Financial Analysis of the Pulp and Paper Industry: Performance and value creation of the world's pulp and paper companies

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on analysoida 74 sellu- ja paperiyrityksen taloudellista suorituskykyä kannattavuutta, maksuvalmiutta, vakavaraisuutta ja arvonluontikykyä kuvaavilla tunnusluvuilla. Tutkimuksen teoriaosa esittelee liiketoiminta-analyysin välineet, jonka jälkeen esitellään taloudelliset tunnusluvut. Empiriaosassa käydään läpi vuoden 2005 tunnusluvut yritystasolla. Jotta voidaan tarkastella tunnuslukujen muutoksia pitkällä aikavälillä, yritykset ryhmitellään maantieteellisen sijainnin sekä liiketoimintaorientaation mukaan. Tutkimus on kuvaileva. Tunnusluvuista voidaan todeta sellu- ja paperiteollisuudessa meneillään oleva toimialan rakennemuutos. Eteläamerikkalaiset yritykset, jotka hyötyvät uudesta ja kustannustehokkaasta raaka-aineesta, ovat siirtyneet lähemmäs arvonluontia, kun taas suurin osa pohjoisamerikkalaisista yrityksistä, jotka olivat toimialan johtavia arvonluojia, ovat nyt arvon tuhoajia. Toimiala kärsii myös alhaisesta kannattavuudesta, joka vaikuttaa eniten pohjoisamerikkalaisiin yrityksiin. Samaan aikaan eteläamerikkalaiset yritykset ovat nostaneet kannattavuuttaan, mikä puolestaan korostaa meneillään olevaa muutosta.

The objective of this study is to analyze the financial performance of 74 pulp and paper companies by using financial ratios to describe profitability, liquidity, solvency as well as stock performance and value creation. The theoretical part begins with presenting the business analysis tools, and after that it focuses on presenting financial ratios. In the empirical part, the company-level ratio analysis is done for the year 2005 and the companies were also grouped by geographical areas and business orientation to view the changes in ratios in a long term. The study is descriptive. The pulp and paper industry is going through a structural change that can be seen in financial ratios. South American companies that profit from the new cost-effective raw material have moved toward being value creators, whereas most of the North American companies that were the leading value creators in the industry are now value destroyers. The industry also suffers from low profitability, which affects mostly the North American companies. At the same time, South American companies have, however, been able to increase their profitability, which underlines the ongoing transformation.
