Resumo

Introduction and aims. During last few decades, the prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, among other metabolic disturbances, has raised considerably in many countries worldwide. Environmental factors (diet, physical activity), in tandem with predisposing genetic factors, may be responsible for this trend.
