Resumo |
El siguiente trabajo consiste en el análisis de dos traducciones, una al catalán y otra al castellano, de la comedia The Importance of Being Earnest de Oscar Wilde. El análisis se centra en los aspectos más problemáticos de la traducción de esta obra This paper aims to provide analysis and comparison of two different translations of Oscar Wilde‟s play „The Importance of Being Earnest‟, one into Spanish, and the other into Catalan. This analysis is focused on the most controversial aspects of the translation of this comedy, such as the translation of humour; the translation strategies for wordplay, the translation of cultural references, or the creation of neologisms. With this analysis we may notice the wide variety of procedures applicable to elements that involve a considerable difficulty and, therefore, need the translator special attention. At the same time, this analysis is useful to observe how many decisions has to take the translator involved in the dichotomy between choosing semantic or pragmatic equivalence in a text where the humor plays such a fundamental role. From the result of analysis it is found out that every translator has a tendency: either keep the translation as literal as possible to the source text, or prioritize the reader‟s comprehension over the literalness.
