Incidència de l’entorn educatiu, familiar i social en les actituds lingüístiques i identitàries dels joves d’origen xinès i llatinoamericà a Catalunya

From an interdisciplinary perspective, the present investigation undertaken by the GREILI-UPF research group has expanded a previous study aiming at explaining how young secondary school students of Latin American and Chinese origin in Catalonia construct their linguistic and cultural identity. Here we analyze the relationship between these youngsters and their social environment in order to determine how these relationships and the socialization process that derives from them influence language attitudes and practices. We focus on two spaces of socialization: (1) the school, where youngsters from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds coexist and interact, and (2) the neighborhood, a geographic and symbolic space where social identity is constructed and, consequently, where young newcomers construct their perceptions regarding the host society, including its linguistic reality. We have collected several sets of data in three public secondary schools and three neighborhoods from Barcelona’s metropolitan area with a high index of immigrant population: (1) interviews with secondary school students, (2) interviews with teachers, (3) social discourses in newspapers that consolidate the social image of the neighborhood, (4) narratives from immigrant families in relation to their neighborhood, (5) participant observation in schools, and (5) observation in the neighborhood. The results of the thematic and, when appropriate, discursive analysis of the data allow us to reach conclusions regarding: (a) the social image of the neighborhoods, (b) the socialization of young newcomers in the schools and the neighborhoods, (c) the identity games, and (d) the language and cultural practices and attitudes of young people, in relation to their countries and languages of origin as well as the school and the neighborhood investigated.

La present investigació del grup de recerca GREILI-UPF ha ampliat, des d’una perspectiva interdisciplinar, un estudi iniciat anteriorment que tenia com a objectiu esbrinar com els joves d’ensenyament secundari d’origen llatinoamericà i xinès construeixen la seva identitat lingüística i cultural. Aquí hem analitzat les relacions entre aquests joves i el seu entorn social amb l’objectiu de determinar com aquestes relacions i el procés de socialització que se’n deriva incideixen en les seves actituds i pràctiques lingüístiques. Ens centrem en dos espais de socialització: (1) l’escola, com a espai de convivència de joves i adults d’orígens culturals i lingüístics diversos i (2) el barri, com a espai geogràfic i simbòlic on es construeix la identitat social i, en conseqüència, lingüística dels col•lectius que hi interactuen i on els joves nouvinguts construeixen la seva percepció de la realitat —inclosa la lingüística—de la societat d’acollida. Ens centrem en tres IES i tres barris de l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona amb elevada població immigrant on hem recollit dades diverses: (1) entrevistes amb estudiants d’ESO i Batxillerat, (2) entrevistes amb professors, (3) discursos socials que circulen en els diaris i consoliden la imatge social dels barris, (4) narratives de famílies immigrants en relació al seu barri, (5) observació participativa en els centres educatius, i (5) observació en espais del barri. Els resultats de l’anàlisi temàtica i, quan s’escau, discursiva, de les dades ens permet d’arribar a conclusions respecte a: (a) la imatge social dels barris, (b) la socialització dels joves nouvinguts en els espais de l’escola i el barri, (c) els jocs identitaris, i (d) les pràctiques i actituds lingüístiques i culturals dels joves, en funció dels llocs i llengües d’origen així com del centre educatiu i el barri investigat.
