Um olhar sobre a surdez: uma história de vida

As teorias ecológicas e sistémicas são um importante marco teórico e metodológico no que respeita à análise do desenvolvimento humano. A criança, enquanto parte de uma unidade funcional -a família -, está inserida num sistema mais vasto e complexo de influências e redes sociais. A família de uma criança surda poderá experimentar níveis superiores de stress no seu quotidiano familiar e social, sendo confrontada com inúmeras situações difíceis de gerir que exigem uma grande capacidade de adaptação por parte da família. As opções educativas que a família adota, o ambiente linguístico em que a criança se desenvolve, as barreiras de comunicação, as representações sobre a surdez e as pessoas surdas, o confronto com a comunidade, as tomadas de decisão em momentos de transição e as incertezas do futuro são alguns dos fatores que influenciam toda a dinâmica familiar. Esta investigação tem por objetivo abordar as temáticas da família e da surdez na tentativa de compreender esta realidade através da perspetiva de pessoas que a veem e apreendem de uma forma única e particular, como uma mãe ouvinte de um filho surdo profundo com a Língua Gestual Portuguesa como língua de comunicação; e uma avó de netos surdos profundos com implante coclear, com a comunicação oral como língua de desenvolvimento, de comunicação e de acesso à informação. Foi adotada uma abordagem metodológica de natureza qualitativa, recorrendo-se à história de vida como estratégia metodológica. Procurou compreender-se o pensar e o sentir pela voz da entrevistada sem avaliações, assumindo-se, assim, a posição de investigadores interpretativos. O relato de vida e a interpretação do próprio ator constituíram o objeto de análise do nosso projeto de pesquisa. Tendo por base a utilização de uma entrevista exploratória semiestruturada, procurou refletir-se sobre as implicações e repercussões da surdez ao longo do ciclo de vida da família, assim como sobre as mudanças e estádios que atravessam. Salienta-se que as diferentes formas adotadas pelas famílias, os estádios de desenvolvimento do ciclo natural de vida, as normas, valores e crenças familiares, o estilo de vida da família, os padrões de interação da família, bem como os recursos e funções da família, são determinantes na forma como as famílias das crianças surdas lidam com e respondem a circunstâncias decisivas e de stress na sua vida. Os profissionais que acompanham as famílias com crianças surdas devem compreender claramente estes elementos e a interação complexa entre eles.

Ecological and systemic theories are an important theoretical and methodological milestone concerning the analysis of human development. The child, as part of a functional unit - the family -, is part of a wider and more complex system of influences and social networks. The family of a deaf child may experience high levels of stress in its family and social daily routines, being faced with numerous situations which are difficult to manage, and which demand a great adaptability from the family. The educational choices that the family makes, the linguistic environment in which the child develops, the communication barriers, the representations of deafness and deaf people, the confrontation with the community, the decision-making in times of transition, and the uncertainty of the future are some of the elements that influence the entire family dynamics. This research aims to address the issues of family and deafness by trying to understand this reality through the perspective of people who see and capture it in a unique and particular way, like the hearing mother of a profoundly deaf child, with the Portuguese Sign Language as communication language; and the grandmother of profoundly deaf grandchildren with cochlear implants, with oral communication as language of development, communication, and access to information. A methodological approach of qualitative nature was adopted, and the life story was the chosen methodological strategy. We tried to understand the thoughts and feelings of the interviewee without evaluating, thus assuming a position of interpretive researchers. The life story and the interpretation of the actor himself were the object of analysis in our research project. Based on the use of a semistructured exploratory interview, we tried to reflect upon the implications and repercussions of deafness throughout the life cycle of the family, and the changes and stadiums that they go through. It is noted that the different ways adopted by families, the developmental stages of the natural cycle of life, the norms, family values and beliefs, the lifestyle of the family, the patterns of family interaction, as well as the resources and functions of family, are crucial in the way that the families of deaf children cope with and respond to decisive and stressful circumstances in their lives. Professionals who accompany families with deaf children must clearly understand these elements and the complex interaction between them.
