Dissertação para a obtenção de grau de doutor em Bioquímica pelo Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica. Universidade Nova de Lisboa Iron is an essential element in life. It is used in a variety of different processes in the energetic metabolism of different organisms. Among these bioenergetic processes is photoferrotrophy, characterized by the utilization of Fe(II) as the sole electron source for photosynthesis. The metabolic activity of photoferrotrophs is proposed to have had a relevant role in the formation of ancient geological structures consisting of Fe(III) minerals, such as the Banded Iron Formations.(...)
