O teatro de revista no Estado Novo: a década de 30 do século XX: dissertação

Dissertação submetida ao departamento de Teatro da Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Teatro - especialização em Artes Performativas vertente Teatro-Música.

Pretende-se com a presente dissertação realizar um estudo sobre o Teatro de Revista em Portugal na época do Estado Novo (1933-1974), mais especificamente no decurso da década de 30 do século XX. Realizou-se uma investigação de carácter histórico que abarca os factores social e económico portugueses numa década politicamente importante, o Estado Novo, vista através de uma manifestação artística tão específica como é a Revista à Portuguesa. Estudou-se também a importância da música neste género teatral (especificamente o fado), bem como as relações existentes entre os guiões escritos das peças de Teatro de Revista e a Comissão de Censura do Secretariado Nacional de Propaganda, tentando-se perceber quais as temáticas mais censuradas e os critérios seguidos pelos censores nas suas visitas aos ensaios e espectáculos de Revista à Portuguesa. Foi feito um estudo de caso, a Revista Água Vai!, de 1937, cujos autores, Chianca de Garcia (1898-1983) e Tomaz Ribeiro Colaço (1899-1965), descontentes com os cortes e comentários do censor no guião primitivo da peça, elaboraram uma carta de contestação que remetem à Comissão de Censura.

ABSTRACT - With this dissertation we intent to show how the Review Theatre genre worked at the time of the Portuguese dictatorial regime called Estado Novo (1933-1974), specifically in the course of the 30’s. It was done an investigation of the historical atmosphere that embraces Portugal in such an important decade, due to the establishment of that political regime and therefore the promulgation of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic in 1933, through a cultural form of theatre so specific as the Revista à Portuguesa (Portuguese Review Theatre). It was studied the importance of the music content (especially the fado genre) in this theatrical genre, and it was studied, as well, the relations between the Censorship Commission and the written screenplays, trying to figure out which topics are censored and what criteria would follow the censors. It was done a study case of Água Vai!, due the pertinence found in the documentation of the National Information Secretary’s process, in which the authors of the play, Chianca Garcia (1898-1983) and Tomaz Ribeiro Colaço (1899-1965), unhappy with the cuts and the comments done by the censor on the primary script, wrote a letter of discontent to the Censorship Committee.
