A tradução de textos para crianças

Esta dissertação, apresentada à Universidade dos Açores como requisito para obtenção do grau de mestre em Tradução e Assessoria Linguística, na área científica dos Estudos de Tradução, pretende fazer uma abordagem aos problemas da tradução de textos para crianças. Assim, far-se-á uma análise de casos de dois livros infantojuvenis (publicados em edição bilingue), com particular ênfase nas respetivas versões em inglês, com o intuito de tentar perceber as estratégias das tradutoras e as suas implicações no produto final. O livro O Natal com um Sabor Diferente pertence à coleção “Vamos Explorar” e é da autoria de Mariana Cymbron e de Rita Bonança, com tradução de Maria das Mercês Pacheco e ilustração de Martim Cymbron. O outro livro, intitulado Ilha à Vista, é da autoria de Rita Bonança e é traduzido e ilustrado por Sandra Pinheiro. Este trabalho dividir-se-á numa parte teórica e noutra de caráter mais prático. Na primeira refletir-se-á sobre os problemas inerentes à tradução, com especial incidência nos textos para crianças, enquanto na segunda parte serão apresentados exemplos/trechos dos livros em questão, com o intuito de perceber e comentar as estratégias de tradução e as suas implicações.

ABSTRACT: This thesis was submitted to the University of the Azores as a requirement for the completion of the master’s degree in Translation and Linguistic Advising, with a concentration in Translation Studies. The purpose of this work is to make an approach to the problems of translating books for children. The work will focus on two books for children (published in a bilingual edition), in particular on their translated version for the English language, in order to understand the translators’ strategies and their implications in the target language. One of the books belongs to the collection “Vamos Explorar” (O Natal com um Sabor Diferente/Savouring a Different Kind of Christmas) and was written by Mariana Cymbron e Rita Bonança and translated by Maria das Mercês Pacheco. Illustrations were made by Martim Cymbron. The other book, entitled Ilha à Vista (the title was not translated to English), was written by Rita Bonança and was translated and illustrated by Sandra Pinheiro. This thesis is divided into two complementary sections, a theoretical approach preceding the practical section. In the first section, a reflection about translation problems will be made, with a major focus on children’s literature, while the second part will focus on sharing and commenting some examples/excerpts from the mentioned books with the purpose of understanding the translator’s decisions and their consequences in the target text.
