Big Enclosed Island, de Daniel de Sá : uma proposta de tradução comentada

A tradução dos três primeiros capítulos do romance Ilha Grande Fechada, de Daniel de Sá, é o ponto de partida da seguinte dissertação de mestrado. O estudo do universo circundante ao romance traduzido e ao seu autor, a reflexão acerca do conceito de tradução, bem como o estudo das caraterísticas e dos desafios da tradução literária e, por conseguinte, das estratégias de tradução, constituem o trabalho preliminar da tradução da obra. As línguas e culturas envolvidas no processo de tradução, a natureza e mensagem do texto, os propósitos do autor, as temáticas da obra, os aspetos estéticoformais e o perfil do potencial leitor foram os fatores que determinaram as escolhas na tradução. No entanto, traduzir é uma arte e um desafio, e, como tal, os maiores desafios encontrados na tradução - a intertextualidade, o léxico, as expressões idiomáticas e os provérbios, a sintaxe e as múltiplas referências histórico-culturais - foram, igualmente, abordados, exemplificados e comentados na presente dissertação.

ABSTRACT: The translation of the first three chapters of the novel Ilha Grande Fechada, by Daniel de Sá, is the starting point of the following master’s degree thesis. The study about the translated novel and its author’s surrounding universe, the reflection about the concept of translation, as well as the study about the characteristics and challenges of literary translation and, hence, about the translation strategies, represent the work that preceded the translation of the novel. The languages and cultures involved in the translation process, the nature and message of the text, the purposes of the author, the set of themes that characterize the literary work, the aesthetic and formal aspects and the profile of the potential reader were prevailing factors for the translation choices. Nevertheless, translation is both an art and a challenge. Hence, the main challenges faced in the course of the translation – the intertextuality, the lexicon, the idioms and the proverbs, the syntax and the multiple historical and cultural references – were also addressed, exemplified and mentioned in the present thesis.
