Devoções e diversões em São João del-Rei : um estudo sobre as festas do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos 1884-1924

Resumo: São analisados os aspectos culturais de uma sociedade mineira de origem colonial, tomando-se como referência as festividades religiosas. A festa em Minas Colonial leva-nos a trabalhar a idéia de que as esferas de sociabilidade e de manifestação de um certo tempo de lazer, em que devoção e diversão compõem as faces de uma mesma moeda, moldaram se nessa sociedade pela instância do fator religioso. Suas origens estão no catolicismo barroco e colonial de raízes ibero-lusitanas, com suas formas lúdico-profanas de teatralização e carnavalização. O estudo enfoca as festas de Matosinhos, ocorridas em São João del-Rei no século XIX. O processo da festa, suas configurações e interdependências levou-nos a discutir o problema da formação social e habitus dessa sociedade. Na

seqüência, foram investigados os níveis de permanência e de enquadramento das festas populares e tradicionais da cidade. Tratamos especialmente da supressão dos festejos em Matosinhos, ocorridos como conseqüência da nova ordem política e religiosa, estabelecida na sociedade brasileira a partir do segundo quartel do século XIX, em especial a política de romanização do catolicismo popular. Identificamos como esse processo se deu nesta sociedade e quais foram e, em que níveis se deram, os enquadramentos e acomodações na relação entre o tradicional e o moderno, entre o catolicismo tradicional e o romanizado na católica e civilizada cidade de São João del-Rei.

Abstract: The cultural aspects of a mineira society, colonial in origin, are analysed considering the religious festivities as a reference. The festival in Colonial Minas leads us to work on the idea that the spheres of sociability and manifestation of a certain time of leisure, in which devotion and amusement compose the faces of the same coin, were shaped by religious factors in this society. Their origins lie in the baroque and colonial Catholicism of Portuguese roots, with their playful-profane forms of theatrelization and carnivalization. The study focus on the festivals of Matosinhos, occurred in São João del Rei in the 19th century. The process of the festival, its configurations and interdependencies, made us discuss the problem of social formation and habitus of this society. Next, the permanence and adjustment levels of folk and traditional festivals of the town were investigated. We especia1ly worked on the deletion of the festivals in Matosinhos, which occurred as a consequence of the new political and religious order, established in Brazilian society since the second quarter of the 19th century, mainly the romanization politics of the folk Catholicism. We identified how this process happened in this society, which ones they were and, in which levels they occurred, the adjustments in the relation between the traditional and the modern, between the Brazilian traditional Catholicism and the Roman one in the catholic and civilised town of São João del-Rei
