Conceitos e atitudes de intervenção arquitetónica em Portugal (1755-1834)

A presente dissertação incide sobre o processo de formação da consciência patrimonial em Portugal, entre o esplendor das luzes e o lento despontar do romantismo. Delimitada pelo grande terramoto e pela afirmação definitiva do liberalismo no reino, a sua cronologia compreende acontecimentos profundamente desestruturantes que promovem referências a edifícios centenários e de vulto. Nela examinamos testemunhos da catástrofe sísmica, dos ataques militares ao reino e das disputas político-ideológicas das suas elites. Analisamos também algumas produções significativas do meio cultural em apreço, nomeadamente, obras historiográficas ou literárias. O nosso intuito é revelar a sensibilidade patrimonial do período e aclarar a elaboração do universo conceptual que veio a estar na base da teoria do restauro arquitectónico.

This thesis focuses on the process of construction of a heritage awareness in Portugal during the Enlightenment splendour and the slow rise of romanticism. Its chronology, circumscribed by the 1755 Earthquake and the final implementation of liberalism, comprises deeply destabilizing events that promote references to century-old buildings. We examine testimonies of the seismic catastrophe, military attacks to the kingdom and the political and ideological quarrels of its elites. We also analyse some significant works deriving from the cultural scene, namely, historical or literary. Our aim is to reveal the sensibility towards the architectural heritage during such period and elucidate the development of the conceptual universe that came to be in the foundation of the restoration theory.
