Resumo

Dissertação mest., História da Arte Portuguesa, Universidade do Algarve, 2007

With this assignment one intends to deepen the knowledge on the old Convent of Our Lady of the Assumption, which was erected in the first decades of the fourteenth century in the city of Faro; and, based on this analysis, to contribute for the elaboration of a proposal for the qualification and enlargement of the museum installed there. The study has been divided in two parts: the first one focusing on several elements, such as the Regra de Santa Clara (Saint Claire's Rule), as definer of the rules that may be translated not only in the architecture but also in the commissioning; the patronage; the different phases of construction; the formal characterization of the various conventual spaces and the community?s way of life. The second part is dedicated to the adaptation of the old convent to a museum. Here, one analyses the different perspectives that have reflected on this issue; from the first adaptation in the sixth decade of the twentieth century, under the responsibility of Direcao Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais, going through the practical solution by Pinheiro e Rosa in 1981, and the Concurso Público Internacional para Remodulação e Ampliação do Museu de Faro in 2000, up to the proposal in 2006.
