The state of São Paulo is the largest producer of cane sugar in Brazil, with approximately 346 million tons in 2008/2009. This great production, associated with hot weather favors trade in sugar cane juice in most cities in the state. Contamination by parasites usually occurs during production but the contamination by bacteria is related with foodhandlers, equipment (grinders) and utensils used in the extraction. Due the lack of data in Botucatu and region, the objective of this study was to analyze 50 samples of syrup, according to the microbiological requirements of RDC Nº 12 (determination of Most Probable Number of thermotolerant coliform and the presence of Salmonella sp) as well the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Trypanosoma cruzi. Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Trypanosoma cruzi were not found, however 82% of the samples presented a higher contamination by thermotolerant coliform than that allowed by microbiological parameters, demonstrating inadequate conditions for retail, besides the lack of hygienic instructions of the sellers

The development of the National Curriculum Parameters for High School (PCN) is established from a logic in which the disciplines are integrated and coordinated in order to promote interdisciplinarity. However, there are few didactic-pedagogic activities that enable teachers in practice to reach this goal. In this paper, we propose an experimental activity to be used with High School students, addressing the concept of viscosity from an interdisciplinary perspective between the disciplines of Physics and Chemistry. For that purpose, flow times of sucrose solutions of different concentrations will be measured in a glass Ford and these data will be used to construct a calibration curve, which will be used to determine the concentration of sucrose in artificial flavor syrup of gooseberry.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of spray droplet spectrum on coffee tree, by using different equipments and syrup volumes. The experiment was set up in a coffee farm, Acaiá variety, Campos Gerais city, MG, Brazil. The treatments were three syrup volumes (150, 300 and 600 L/ha). The lower volume was sprayed with the pneumatic sprayer Martignani, Whirlwind B612 Autonom-Trac mode, and the other volume rates using the conventional hydraulic sprayer to coffee tree. It was possible concludes that the spray volume can be reduced in applications on coffee tree using the pneumatic sprayer.

Fruit purees, combined or not with polysaccharides, have been used in some studies to elaborate edible films. The present study was conducted to evaluate tensile properties and water vapor barrier of alginate-acerola puree films plasticized with corn syrup, and to study the influence of cellulose whiskers from different origins (cotton fiber or coconut husk fiber, the latter submitted to one- or multi-stage bleaching) on the film properties. The whiskers improved the overall tensile properties (except by elongation) and the water vapor barrier of the films. The films with coconut whiskers, even those submitted only to a one-stage bleaching, presented similar properties to those of films with cotton whiskers, despite the low compatibility between the matrix and the remaining lignin in coconut whiskers. This was probably ascribed to a counterbalancing effect of the higher aspect ratios of the coconut whiskers. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Insects are able to combat infection by initiating an efficient immune response that involves synthesizing antimicrobial peptides and a range of other defense molecules. These responses may be costly to the organism, resulting in it exploiting endogenous resources to maintain homeostasis or support defense to the detriment of other physiological needs. We used queenless worker bees on distinct dietary regimes that may alter hemolymph protein storage and ovary activation to investigate the physiological costs of infection with Serratia marcescens. The expression of the genes encoding the storage proteins vitellogenin and hexamerin 70a, the vitellogenin receptor, and vasa (which has a putative role in reproduction), was impaired in the infected bees. This impairment was mainly evident in the bees fed beebread, which caused significantly higher expression of these genes than did royal jelly or syrup, and this was confirmed at the vitellogenin and hexamerin 70a protein levels. Beebread was also the only diet that promoted ovary activation in the queenless bees, but this activation was significantly impaired by the infection. The expression of the genes encoding the storage proteins apolipophorins-I and -III and the lipophorin receptor was not altered by infection regardless the diet provided to the bees. Similarly, the storage of apolipophorin-I in the hemolymph was only slightly impaired by the infection, independently of the supplied diet. Taken together these results indicate that, infection demands a physiological cost from the transcription of specific protein storage-related genes and from the reproductive capacity.
