The recognition of excessive fears and worries in children is important for early intervention. Despite current knowledge about the important contribution fathers make to their children’s emotional, social and cognitive development, more emphasis is often given to the views of mothers in both research and practice. This paper reports on a community study of 220 families. Fathers, mothers and children reported on children’s fears and worries using three different methods. While father and mother ratings were moderately correlated on two of the measures, there was relatively poor parent-child agreement. Implications for the role of fathers in the assessment of childhood fears and worries are discussed.

This paper explores the various paths to equality and inclusivity developed in the past 40 years within the Australian workplace with a view to critically examining their capability of addressing diversity and equality within the cultural needs of a unique society. A society which struggles to overcome the tyranny of distance and a colonial past as it takes its place in the world as a global 1st world economy country in what is often considered ‘the global north’ despite its geographical location. Findings indicate that despite various legislative and non-legislative approaches including anti-discrimination; affirmative action; equal opportunity; managing diversity and more recently gender equality, the individual members of the many diverse groups in the Australian workplace still experience inferior work conditions and work opportunities.

The present study investigated short-term effects of daily social exclusion at work on various indicators of sleep quality and tested the mediating role of work-related worries using a time-based diary study with ambulatory assessments of sleep quality. Ninety full-time employees participated in a 2-week data collection. Multilevel analyses revealed that daily workplace social exclusion and work-related worries were positively related to sleep fragmentation in the following night. Daily social exclusion, however, was unrelated to sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency and self-reported sleep quality. Moreover, worries did not mediate the effect of social exclusion at work on sleep fragmentation. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Objective: The current study examined anxiety and social worries in a group of children with Asperger syndrome (AS). Method: Sixty-five children with AS were compared with a clinically anxious sample and a normative sample using parent and child reports. Results: Comparisons between clinically anxious children and children with AS showed similar scores on overall anxiety and on six anxiety subscales using child reports. Parent reports revealed higher ratings of overall anxiety and described children with AS experiencing more obsessive-compulsive symptoms and physical injury fears than clinically anxious children. Conclusions: Children with AS without a diagnosis of anxiety, present with more anxiety symptoms than a normal population and with a different profile than a clinically anxious population. Study limitations are identified and considerations for future research presented.

This article examines how the concept of active citizenship has been given a neo-liberal character by examining practice in three different educational contexts in Sweden. The concept of active citizenship has become influential in educational policy and practice throughout the European Union. The aim of this article is to highlight concerns at how this concept has come to be re-shaped by neo-liberal principles in Swedish education. The analysis highlights three themes, based on voice, ethical awareness and complexity and mutuality of lived experience, and argues that they provide the basis for a shift away from the present neo-liberal colouring of the concept.

OBJECTIVE: This mixed-methods study aimed to explore concerns and worries related to living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: Overall, 294 patients with a clinically established diagnosis of IBD were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Concerns and worries were measured with one open-ended question. Measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms and disease activity were also administered. A thematic analysis was conducted and thematic map created. Spearman's rho was used to identify univariate correlations between predictors and the main themes. Binary logistic regression was used to test the predictors of the main themes. RESULTS: Despite the majority of study participants being in IBD remission (74%, n=217), all but 11 reported significant IBD-related concerns. Twenty two percent reported symptoms of depression and 41% of anxiety. Four themes were identified: Quality of life (51%); Unpredictability (35%); Symptoms (34%) and Treatments (19%). Males and older people were less concerned about Quality of life (OR=.597, 95% CI: .363-.980 and OR=.980, 95% CI: .965-.995, respectively). Those in remission were less concerned about Symptoms (OR=.510, 95% CI: .281- .926) while those with longer disease duration worried more about the Symptoms (OR=1.035, 95% CI: 1.010-1.061). Males were less concerned about Treatments (OR=.422, 95% CI: .229-.777). CONCLUSION: IBD patients report significant disease-related concerns even when in remission. Further exploration of what predicts patient concerns may help in shaping health-care delivery so that it better addresses patient needs.
