This paper describes a generic and integrated solar powered remote Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gas sensing system. The system uses a generic gas sensing system for CH4 and CO2 concentrations using metal oxide (MoX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors, and a new solar cell encapsulation method to power the UASs as well as a data management platform to store, analyse and share the information with operators and external users. The system was successfully field tested at ground and low altitudes, collecting, storing and transmitting data in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping. The system can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications, especially in agriculture, bushfires, mining studies, opening the way to a ubiquitous low cost environmental monitoring. There is an increased interest in measuring the amount of greenhouse gases produced by farming practices . This paper describes an integrated solar powered Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gas sensing system for greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural lands. The system uses a generic gas sensing system for CH4 and CO2 concentrations using metal oxide (MoX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors, and a new solar cell encapsulation method to power the unmanned aerial system (UAS)as well as a data management platform to store, analyze and share the information with operators and external users. The system was successfully field tested at ground and low altitudes, collecting, storing and transmitting data in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping. The system can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications at a relatively low operational cost. In particular, agricultural environments are increasingly subject to emissions mitigation policies. Accurate measurements of CH4 and CO2 with its temporal and spatial variability can provide farm managers key information to plan agricultural practices.

This work investigates low cost localization systems (LS) based on received signal strength (RSS) and integrated with different types of antennas with main emphasis on sectorial antennas. The last few years have witnessed an outstanding growth in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Among its various possible applications, the localization field became a major area of research. The localization techniques based on RSS are characterized by simplicity and low cost of integration. The integration of LS based on RSS and sectorial antennas (SA) was proven to provide an effective solution for reducing the number of required nodes of the networks and allows the combination of several techniques, such as RSS and angle of arrival (AoA). This PhD thesis focuses on studying techniques, antennas and protocols that best meet the needs of each LS with main focus on low cost systems based on RSS and AoA. Firstly there are studied localization techniques and system that best suit the requirements of the user and the antennas that are most appropriate according to the nature of the signal. In this step it is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of the undertaken work. Then the developed antennas are presented according to the following categories: sectorial and microstrip antennas. Two sectorial antennas are presented: a narrowband antenna operating at 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and a broadband antenna operating at 800MHz-2.4GHz. The low cost printed antennas were designed to operate at 5 GHz, which may be used for vehicular communication. After presenting the various antennas, several prototypes of indoor/outdoor LS are implemented and analyzed. Localization protocols are also proposed, one based on simplicity and low power, and the other on interoperability with different types of antennas and system requirements.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

We focus on large-scale and dense deeply embedded systems where, due to the large amount of information generated by all nodes, even simple aggregate computations such as the minimum value (MIN) of the sensor readings become notoriously expensive to obtain. Recent research has exploited a dominance-based medium access control(MAC) protocol, the CAN bus, for computing aggregated quantities in wired systems. For example, MIN can be computed efficiently and an interpolation function which approximates sensor data in an area can be obtained efficiently as well. Dominance-based MAC protocols have recently been proposed for wireless channels and these protocols can be expected to be used for achieving highly scalable aggregate computations in wireless systems. But no experimental demonstration is currently available in the research literature. In this paper, we demonstrate that highly scalable aggregate computations in wireless networks are possible. We do so by (i) building a new wireless hardware platform with appropriate characteristics for making dominance-based MAC protocols efficient, (ii) implementing dominance-based MAC protocols on this platform, (iii) implementing distributed algorithms for aggregate computations (MIN, MAX, Interpolation) using the new implementation of the dominance-based MAC protocol and (iv) performing experiments to prove that such highly scalable aggregate computations in wireless networks are possible.

Real-time monitoring applications may be used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) and may generate packet flows with strict quality of service requirements in terms of delay, jitter, or packet loss. When strict delays are imposed from source to destination, the packets must be delivered at the destination within an end-to-end delay (EED) hard limit in order to be considered useful. Since the WSN nodes are scarce both in processing and energy resources, it is desirable that they only transport useful data, as this contributes to enhance the overall network performance and to improve energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-layer admission control (CLAC) mechanism to enhance the network performance and increase energy efficiency of a WSN, by avoiding the transmission of potentially useless packets. The CLAC mechanism uses an estimation technique to preview packets EED, and decides to forward a packet only if it is expected to meet the EED deadline defined by the application, dropping it otherwise. The results obtained show that CLAC enhances the network performance by increasing the useful packet delivery ratio in high network loads and improves the energy efficiency in every network load.

In this paper, we suggest the idea of separately treating the connectivity and communication model of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). We then propose a novel connectivity model for a WSN using first order Reed-Muller Codes. While the model has a hierarchical structure, we have shown that it works equally well for a Distributed WSN. Though one can use any communication model, we prefer to use the communication model suggested by Ruj and Roy [1] for all computations and results in our work. Two suitable secure (symmetric) cryptosystems can then be applied for the two different models, connectivity and communication respectively. By doing so we have shown how resiliency and scalability are appreciably improved as compared to Ruj and Roy [1].

Congestion in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a crucial issue. That is due to the relatively high node density and source-to-sink communication pattern. Congestion not only causes packet loss, but also leads to excessive energy consumption as well as delay. Therefore, in order to prolong network lifetime and improve fairness and provide better quality of service, developing a novel solution for congestion estimation and control is important to be considered. To address this problem, we propose a type-2 fuzzy logic based algorithm to detect and control congestion level in WSNs. The proposed algorithm considers local information such as packet loss rate and delay to control congestion in the network. Simulation results show that our protocol performs better than a recently developed protocol in prolonging network lifetime as well as decreasing packet loss.

Despite significant advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy conservation remains one of the most important research challenges. Proper organization of nodes (clustering) is one of the major techniques to expand the lifespan of the whole network through aggregating data at the cluster head. The cluster head is the backbone of the entire cluster. That means if a cluster head fails to accomplish its function, the received and collected data by cluster head can be lost. Moreover, the energy consumption following direct communications from sources to base stations will be increased. In this paper, we propose a type-2 fuzzy based self-configurable cluster head selection (SCCH) approach to not only consider the selection criterion of the cluster head but also present the cluster backup approach. Thus, in case of cluster failure, the system still works in an efficient way. The novelty of this protocol is the ability of handling communication uncertainty, which is an inherent operational aspect of sensor networks. The experiment results indicate SCCH performs better than other recently developed methods.

Despite significant advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy conservation in the networks remains one of the most important research challenges. One approach commonly used to prolong the network lifetime is through aggregating data at the cluster heads (CHs). However, there is possibility that the CHs may fail and function incorrectly due to a number of reasons such as power instability. During the failure, the CHs are unable to collect and transfer data correctly. This affects the performance of the WSN. Early detection of failure of CHs will reduce the data loss and provide possible minimal recovery efforts. This paper proposes a self-configurable clustering mechanism to detect the disordered CHs and replace them with other nodes. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
