We study the thermoelectric power under classically large magnetic field (TPM) in ultrathin films (UFs), quantum wires (QWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined III-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The TPM has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, stressed materials, bismuth and carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It is found taking quantum confined CdGeAs2, InAs, InSb, CdS, stressed n-InSb and Bi that the TPM increases with increasing film thickness and decreasing electron statistics exhibiting quantized nature for all types of quantum confinement. The TPM in CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing carrier concentration and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of the TPM for non-degenerate materials having parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test. In this paper, an attempt is made to study the influence of external light waves on the thermoelectric power under strong magnetic field (TPSM) in ultrathin films (UFs), quantum wires (QWs) and quantum dots (QDs) of optoelectronic materials whose unperturbed dispersion relation of the conduction electrons are defined by three and two band models of Kane together with parabolic energy bands on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion laws in each case. We have plotted the TPSM as functions of film thickness, electron concentration, light intensity and wavelength for UFs, QWs and ODs of InSb, GaAs, Hg1-xCdxTe and In1-xGaxAsyP1-y respectively. It appears from the figures that for UFs, the TPSM increases with increasing thickness in quantum steps, decreases with increasing electron degeneracy exhibiting entirely different types of oscillations and changes with both light intensity and wavelength and these two latter types of plots are the direct signature of light waves on opto-TPSM. For QWs, the opto-TPSM exhibits rectangular oscillations with increasing thickness and shows enhanced spiky oscillations with electron concentration per unit length. For QDs, the opto-TPSM increases with increasing film thickness exhibiting trapezoidal variations which occurs during quantum jumps and the length and breadth of the trapezoids are totally dependent on energy band constants. Under the condition of non-degeneracy, the results of opto-TPSM gets simplified into the well-known form of classical TPSM equation which the function of three constants only and being invariant of the signature of band structure.

We report unipolar resistive switching in ultrathin films of chemically produced graphene (reduced graphene oxide) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The two-terminal devices with yield >99% are made at room temperature by forming continuous films of graphene of thickness similar to 20 nm on indium tin oxide coated glass electrode, followed by metal (Au or Al) deposition on the film. These memory devices are nonvolatile, rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 10(5) and switching times up to 10 mu s. The devices made of MWNT films are rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 400. The resistive switching mechanism is proposed to be nanogap formation and filamentary conduction paths. Polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL) and Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles were used to fabricate ultrathin films on the ITO substrate through electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly method. Multilayer growth was examined by UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The resulting ITO/(PFIL/PB)n electrode showed two couples of well-defined redox peaks and good electrocatalytical activity towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.

Two kinds of dewetting and their transition induced by composition fluctuation due to different composition in blend [poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN)] films on SiOx substrate at 145 degrees C have been studied by in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that morphology and pathway of dewetting depended crucially on the composition. Possible reason is the variation in intensity of composition fluctuation resulted from the change of components in polymer blend. Based on the discussion of this fluctuation due to the composition gradient, parameter of U-q0/E, which describes the initial amplitude of the surface undulation and original thickness of film respectively, has been employed to distinguish the morphologies of spontaneous dewetting including bicontinuous structures and holes.

The transition of lamellar crystal orientation from flat-on to edge-on in ultrathin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) via solvent vapor (toluene) treatment Was investigated. When the as-prepared film was treated in saturated solvent vapor, breakout crystals could form quickly, and then they transformed from square single crystals (flat-on lamellae) to dendrites and finally to nanowire crystals (edge-on lamellae). Initially, heterogeneous nucleation tit the polymer/substrate interface dominated the structure evolution, leading to flat-on lamellar crystals orientation. And the transition from faceted habits to dendrites indicated a transition of underlying mechanism from nucleation-controlled to diffusion-limited growth. As the solvent molecules gradually diffused into the polymer/substrate interface, it will subsequently weaken the polymer-substrate interaction.

In this work, the film thickness (l(0)) effect on the phase and dewetting behaviors of the blend film of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly (styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (PMMA/SAN) has been studied by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thinner film shows the more compatibility of the blend, and the phase separation of the film occurs at l(0) > 5R(g) (radius of gyration). An initially time-independent q*, the characteristic wavenumber of the phase image, which is in good agreement of Cahn's linearized theory for the early stage of spinodal decomposition, has been obtained in real space and discussed in detail. For 5R(g) > l(0) > 3R(g), a "pseudo-dewetting/(phase separation + wetting)" behavior occurs, where the pseudo-wetting is driven by the concentration fluctuation mechanism. For 10 < 3R(g), a "real dewetting/(phase separation + wetting)" behavior occurs.

Dynamics of dewetting and phase separation in ultrathin films (thickness is ca. one radius of gyration, approximate to 1 R-g) of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends on Si substrate has been studied by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). In the miscible region, a "spinodal-like" dewetting driven by a composition fluctuation recently predicted by Wensink and Jerome (Langmuir 2002, 18, 413) occurs. In the two-phase region, the dewetting of the whole film is followed by phase separation in the droplets, coupling with the wetting of the substrate by the PMMA extracted by the strong attractive interaction between them.

A layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption and polymerization method was developed for the controllable preparation of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles within ultrathin films. By repetitive adsorption of pyrrole and subsequent polymerization with 12-molybdophosphoric acid, the polyelectrolyte multilayer films containing PPy nanoparticles were fabricated. UV-visible absorption spectrocopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammograras (CVs) were used to characterize the PPy nanoparticles and their multilayer thin films. UV-visible spectra indicate that the growth of PPy nanoparticles was regular and occurred within the polyelectrolyte films. The size of prepared PPy nanoparticles was found by TEM to increase with the increasing of polymerization cycles. The electrochemistry behavior of the multilayer thin films was studied in detail on ITO. The results suggest that the LbL adsorption and polymerization method developed herein provides an effective way to prepare PPy nanoparticles in the polymer matrix.

The morphologies and crystalline structures of melt-crystallized ultrathin isotactic poly(1-butene) films have been studied with transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It is demonstrated that a bypass of form II crystallization can be achieved with an increase in its crystallization temperature. Electron microscopy observations show that melt-grown isotactic poly(1-butene) single crystals have a well-shaped hexagonal form, whereas form I crystals converted from form II display the morphologies of their tetragonal precursors. Electron diffraction results indicate that, instead of the twinned hexagonal pattern of the converted form I crystal, the directly formed form I single crystals exhibit an untwinned hexagonal pattern.

Ultrathin multilayer films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a polyoxotungstoeuropate cluster K-13[Eu(SiW11O39)(2)] (Eu(SiW11)(2)) have been prepared by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The Eu(SiW11)(2)/PAH multilayer films have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectra and atomic force microscopy (AFM). UV-Vis measurements reveal regular film growth with each Eu(SiW11)(2) adsorption. The photoluminescent behavior of the film at room temperature was to show the characteristic Eu3+ emission pattern of D-5(o) --> F-7(J). The occurrence of photoluminescent activity confirms the potential for creating luminescent multilayers with polyoxometalates.

We describe here a controlled fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer films consisting of silicotungstic heteropolyanion SiW12O404- and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) on Au electrodes previously self-assembled with cysteamine monolayers based on layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. The thus-forming monolayer and multilayer chemically modified electrodes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry on their electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties. The composite ultrathin films exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3-, H2O2, and HNO2. The electrocatalytic effects on HNO2 reduction are enhanced with increasing layer number from 1 to 3 but level off with much thicker multilayers. The stability of the monolayer and multilayer films is also examined. (C) 2000 The Electrochemical Society. S0013-4651(99)04-057-4. All rights reserved.

The recrystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on the highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates at temperatures below the melting temperature of HDPE has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained by the bright-field observation and the electron diffraction show that upon annealing the HDPE-quenched films on the oriented iPP substrates at temperatures below 125 degrees C, only a small amount of HDPE recrystallizes on the iPP substrate with [001](HDPE)//[001](iPP), while annealing the HDPE-quenched films at temperatures above 125 degrees C, all of the HDPE crystallites recrystallize epitaxially on the iPP substrate with [001](HDPE)//[101](iPP). Different aspects of the structure-magnetism and morphology-magnetism correlation in the ultrathin limit are studied in epitaxial Fe films grown on MgO(001). In the initial stages of growth the presence of substrate steps, intrinsically higher than an Fe atomic layer, prevent the connection between Fe islands and hence the formation of large volume magnetic regions. This is proposed as an explanation to the superparamagnetic nature of ultrathin Fe films grown on MgO in addition to the usually considered islanded, or Vollmer-Weber, growth. Using this model, we explain the observed transition from superparamagnetism to ferromagnetism for Fe coverages above 3 monolayers (ML). However, even though ferromagnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy are observed for 4 ML, complete coverage of the MgO substrate by the Fe ultrathin films only occurs around 6 ML as determined by polar Kerr spectra and simulations that consider different coverage situations. In annealed 3.5 ML Fe films, shape or configurational anisotropy dominates the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy, due to an annealing induced continuous to islanded morphological transition. A small interface anisotropy in thicker films is observed, probably due to dislocations observed at the Fe¿MgO(001) interface.
