Uncertainties associated with the structural model and measured vibration data may lead to unreliable damage detection. In this paper, we show that geometric and measurement uncertainty cause considerable problem in damage assessment which can be alleviated by using a fuzzy logic-based approach for damage detection. Curvature damage factor (CDF) of a tapered cantilever beam are used as damage indicators. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is used to study the changes in the damage indicator due to uncertainty in the geometric properties of the beam. Variation in these CDF measures due to randomness in structural parameter, further contaminated with measurement noise, are used for developing and testing a fuzzy logic system (FLS). Results show that the method correctly identifies both single and multiple damages in the structure. For example, the FLS detects damage with an average accuracy of about 95 percent in a beam having geometric uncertainty of 1 percent COV and measurement noise of 10 percent in single damage scenario. For multiple damage case, the FLS identifies damages in the beam with an average accuracy of about 94 percent in the presence of above mentioned uncertainties. The paper brings together the disparate areas of probabilistic analysis and fuzzy logic to address uncertainty in structural damage detection.

The paper presents the results of a computational modeling for damage identification process for an axial rod representing an end-bearing pile foundation with known damage and a simply supported beam representing a bridge girder. The paper proposes a methodology for damage identification from measured natural frequencies of a contiguously damaged reinforced concrete axial rod and beam, idealized with distributed damage model. Identification of damage is from Equal_Eigen_value_change (Iso_Eigen_value_Change) contours, plotted between pairs of different frequencies. The performance of the method is checked for a wide variation of damage positions and extents. An experiment conducted on a free-free axially loaded reinforced concrete member and a flexural beam is shown as examples to prove the pros and cons of this method. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Ductility based design of reinforced concrete structures implicitly assumes certain damage under the action of a design basis earthquake. The damage undergone by a structure needs to be quantified, so as to assess the post-seismic reparability and functionality of the structure. The paper presents an analytical method of quantification and location of seismic damage, through system identification methods. It may be noted that soft ground storied buildings are the major casualties in any earthquake and hence the example structure is a soft or weak first storied one, whose seismic response and temporal variation of damage are computed using a non-linear dynamic analysis program (IDARC) and compared with a normal structure. Time period based damage identification model is used and suitably calibrated with classic damage models. Regenerated stiffness of the three degrees of freedom model (for the three storied frame) is used to locate the damage, both on-line as well as after the seismic event. Multi resolution analysis using wavelets is also used for localized damage identification for soft storey columns.

Impoverishment of particles, i.e. the discretely simulated sample paths of the process dynamics, poses a major obstacle in employing the particle filters for large dimensional nonlinear system identification. A known route of alleviating this impoverishment, i.e. of using an exponentially increasing ensemble size vis-a-vis the system dimension, remains computationally infeasible in most cases of practical importance. In this work, we explore the possibility of unscented transformation on Gaussian random variables, as incorporated within a scaled Gaussian sum stochastic filter, as a means of applying the nonlinear stochastic filtering theory to higher dimensional structural system identification problems. As an additional strategy to reconcile the evolving process dynamics with the observation history, the proposed filtering scheme also modifies the process model via the incorporation of gain-weighted innovation terms. The reported numerical work on the identification of structural dynamic models of dimension up to 100 is indicative of the potential of the proposed filter in realizing the stated aim of successfully treating relatively larger dimensional filtering problems. Sistemas estruturais em suas variadas aplicações incluindo-se veículos espaciais, automóveis e estruturas de engenharia civil tais como prédios, pontes e plataformas off-shore, acumulam dano durante suas vidas úteis. Em muitas situações, tal dano pode não ser visualmente observado. Do ponto de vista da segurança e da performance da estrutura, é desejável monitorar esta possível ocorrência, localizá-la e quantificá-la. Métodos de identificação de sistemas, que em geral, são classificados numa categoria de Técnicas de Avaliação Não-Destrutivas, podem ser utilizados para esta finalidade. Usando dados experimentais tais como frequências naturais, modos de vibração e deslocamentos estáticos, e um modelo analítico estrutural, parâmetros da estrutura podem ser identificados. As propriedades estruturais do modelo analítico são modificadas de modo a minimizar a diferença entre os dados obtidos por aquele modelo e a resposta medida. Isto pode ser definido como um problema inverso onde os parâmetros da estrutura são identificados. O problema inverso, descrito acima, foi resolvido usando métodos globais de otimização devido à provável presença de inúmeros mínimos locais e a não convexidade do espaço de projeto. Neste trabalho o método da Evolução Diferencial (Differential Evolution, DE) foi utilizado como ferramenta principal de otimização. Trata-se de uma meta-heurística inspirada numa população de soluções sucessivamente atualizada por operações aritméticas como mutações, recombinações e critérios de seleção dos melhores indivíduos até que um critério de convergência seja alcançado. O método da Evolução Diferencial foi desenvolvido como uma heurística para minimizar funções não diferenciáveis e foi aplicado a estruturas planas de treliças com diferentes níveis de danos.

No presente trabalho, o modelo de identificação de danos apresentado por Stutz et al. (2005) é utilizado. A contribuição do presente trabalho consiste em avaliar alguns pontos da identificação de danos em vigas e, em seguida, expandir o modelo para identificar danos estruturais em placas. Uma avaliação do comportamento das frequências naturais e da matriz de flexibilidade para uma viga de Euler-Bernoulli simplesmente apoiada, na presença de danos simulados pelo parâmetro de coesão é realizada. Essa análise, permite também o conhecimento das regiões onde há maior sensibilidade ao dano, ajudando a traçar estratégias para melhorar a identificação de danos em regiões que sofrem poucas alterações na presença de falhas estruturais. Comparou-se o comportamento dos dois primeiros modos de vibração da viga simplesmente apoiada na presença de um dano estrutural, com os dois primeiros modos de vibração da estrutura intacta e corrompidos por ruído. Diversos métodos de localização de danos e de otimização são avaliados na tentativa de identificar os danos simulados através do campo de danos proposto por Stutz et al. (2005) na presença de dados ruidosos. Após a apresentação de resultados da identificação de danos obtidos para uma viga de Euler-Bernoulli simplesmente apoiada, uma análise do comportamento das frequências naturais e da matriz de flexibilidade de uma viga de Euler- Bernoulli engastada na presença de danos é apresentada, assim como os resultados de identificação de danos considerando-se diversos cenários e níveis de ruído. Uma importante contribuição do presente trabalho consiste em propor um método de identificação de danos via matriz de flexibilidade onde o campo de defeitos para a placa de Kirchoff é modelado via MEF. Uma análise do comportamento da matriz de flexibilidade devido à presença de danos na placa é apresentada, assim como os resultados numéricos da identificação de danos estruturais com e sem a presença de dados ruidosos. Com a finalidade de reduzir o custo computacional na identificação de danos em estruturas complexas, uma hibridização entre o método de otimização por enxame de particulas (PSO, do inglês, Particle Swarm Optimization) e o método de otimização Levenberg-Marquardt é proposta. Resultados numéricos da hibridização para uma estrutura do tipo placa são apresentados.

The feasibility of vibration data to identify damage in a population of cylindrical shells is assessed. Vibration data from a population of cylinders were measured and modal analysis was employed to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes. The mode shapes were transformed into the Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (COMAC). The natural frequencies and the COMAC before and after damage for a population of structures show that modal analysis is a viable route to damage identification in a population of nominally identical cylinders. Modal energies, which are defined as the integrals of the real and imaginary components of the frequency response functions over various frequency ranges, were extracted and transformed into the Coordinate Modal Energy Assurance Criterion (COMEAC). The COMEAC before and after damage show that using modal energies is a viable approach to damage identification in a population of cylinders.

This thesis focuses on the modelling of settlement induced damage to masonry buildings. In densely populated areas, the need for new space is nowadays producing a rapid increment of underground excavations. Due to the construction of new metro lines, tunnelling activity in urban areas is growing. One of the consequences is a greater attention to the risk of damage on existing structures. Thus, the assessment of potential damage of surface buildings has become an essential stage in the excavation projects in urban areas (Chapter 1). The current damage risk assessment procedure is based on strong simplifications, which not always lead to conservative results. Object of this thesis is the development of an improved damage classification system, which takes into account the parameters influencing the structural response to settlement, like the non-linear behaviour of masonry and the soil-structure interaction. The methodology used in this research is based on experimental and numerical modelling. The design and execution of an experimental benchmark test representative of the problem allows to identify the principal factors and mechanisms involved. The numerical simulations enable to generalize the results to a broader range of physical scenarios. The methodological choice is based on a critical review of the currently available procedures for the assessment of settlement-induced building damage (Chapter 2). A new experimental test on a 1/10th masonry façade with a rubber base interface is specifically designed to investigate the effect of soil-structure interaction on the tunnelling-induced damage (Chapter 3). The experimental results are used to validate a 2D semi-coupled finite element model for the simulation of the structural response (Chapter 4). The numerical approach, which includes a continuum cracking model for the masonry and a non-linear interface to simulate the soil-structure interaction, is then used to perform a sensitivity study on the effect of openings, material properties, initial damage, initial conditions, normal and shear behaviour of the base interface and applied settlement profile (Chapter 5). The results assess quantitatively the major role played by the normal stiffness of the soil-structure interaction and by the material parameters defining the quasi-brittle masonry behaviour. The limitation of the 2D modelling approach in simulating the progressive 3D displacement field induced by the excavation and the consequent torsional response of the building are overcome by the development of a 3D coupled model of building, foundation, soil and tunnel (Chapter 6). Following the same method applied to the 2D semi-coupled approach, the 3D model is validated through comparison with the monitoring data of a literature case study. The model is then used to carry out a series of parametric analyses on geometrical factors: the aspect ratio of horizontal building dimensions with respect to the tunnel axis direction, the presence of adjacent structures and the position and alignment of the building with respect to the excavation (Chapter 7). The results show the governing effect of the 3D building response, proving the relevance of 3D modelling. Finally, the results from the 2D and 3D parametric analyses are used to set the framework of an overall damage model which correlates the analysed structural features with the risk for the building of being damaged by a certain settlement (Chapter 8). This research therefore provides an increased experimental and numerical understanding of the building response to excavation-induced settlements, and sets the basis for an operational tool for the risk assessment of structural damage (Chapter 9).

The development of infrastructure in major cities often involves tunnelling, which can cause damage to existing structures. Therefore, these projects require a careful prediction of the risk of settlement induced damage. The simplified approach of current methods cannot account for three-dimensional structural aspects of buildings, which can result in an inaccurate evaluation of damage. This paper investigates the effect of the building alignment with the tunnel axis on structural damage. A three-dimensional, phased, fully coupled finite element model with non-linear material properties is used as a tool to perform a parametric study. The model includes the simulation of the tunnel construction process, with the tunnel located adjacent to a masonry building. Three different type of settlements are included (sagging, hogging and a combination of them), with seven different increasing angles of the building with respect to the tunnel axis. The alignment parameter is assessed, based on the maximum occurring crack width, measured in the building. Results show a significant dependency of the final damage on the building and tunnel alignment.

One of the main causes of failure of historic buildings is represented by the differential settlements of foundations. Finite element analysis provides a useful tool for predicting the consequences of given ground displacements in terms of structural damage and also assesses the need of strengthening techniques. The actual damage classification for buildings subject to settlement bases the assessment of the potential damage on the expected crack pattern of the structure. In this paper, the correlation between the physical description of the damage in terms of crack width and the interpretation of the finite element analysis output is analyzed. Different discrete and continuum crack models are applied to simulate an experiment carried on a scale model of a masonry historical building, the Loggia Palace in Brescia (Italy). Results are discussed and a modified version of the fixed total strain smeared crack model is evaluated, in order to solve the problem related to the calculation of the exact crack width.

Purpose: To investigate the roles of the CCL2-CCR2 and CX3CL1-CX3CR1 pathways in experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU)-mediated retinal tissue damage and angiogenesis.

Methods: The C57BL/6J wild-type (WT) and CCL2−/−CX3CR1gfp/gfp (double knockout [DKO]) mice were immunized with IRBP1-20. Retinal inflammation and tissue damage were evaluated clinically and histologically at different days postimmunization (p.i.). Retinal neovascular membranes were evaluated by confocal microscopy of retinal flat mounts, and immune cell infiltration by flow cytometry.

Results: At day 25 p.i., DKO mice had lower clinical and histological scores and fewer CD45highCD11b+ infiltrating cells compared with WT mice. The F4/80+macrophages constitute 40% and 21% and CD11b+Gr-1+Ly6G+ neutrophils constitute 10% and 22% of retinal infiltrating cells in WT and DKO mice, respectively. At the late stages of EAU (day 60–90 p.i.), DKO and WT mice had similar levels of inflammatory score. However, less structural damage and reduced angiogenesis were detected in DKO mice. Neutrophils were rarely detected in the inflamed retina in both WT and DKO mice. Macrophages and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) accounted for 8% and 3% in DKO EAU retina, and 19% and 10% in WT EAU retina; 71% of infiltrating cells were T/B-lymphocytes in DKO EAU retina and 50% in WT EAU retina.

Conclusions: Experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis–mediated retinal tissue damage and angiogenesis is reduced in CCL2−/−CX3CR1gfp/gfp mice. Retinal inflammation is dominated by neutrophils at the acute stage and lymphocytes at the chronic stage in these mice. Our results suggest that CCR2+ and CX3CR1+monocytes are both involved in tissue damage and angiogenesis in EAU.

A new approach for global detection of seismic damage in a single-storey steel concentrically braced frame (CBF) structure is presented. The filtered lateral in-plane acceleration response of the CBF structure is integrated twice to provide the lateral in-plane displacement which is used to infer buckling and yielding damage. The level of interstorey drift of the CBF during a seismic excitation allows the yield and buckling of the bracing members to be identified and indirectly detects damage based on exceedance of calculated lateral in-plane displacement limits. A band-pass filter removes noise from the acceleration signal followed by baseline correction being used to reduce the drift in velocity and displacement during numerical integration. This pre-processing results in reliable numerical integration of the frame acceleration that predicts the displacement response accurately when compared to the measured lateral displacement of the CBF structure. Importantly, the structural damage is not assumed through removal of bracing members, rather damage is induced through actual seismic loading. The buckling and yielding displacement threshold limits used to identify damage are demonstrated to accurately identify the initiation of buckling and yielding.

This study presents a vibration-based health monitoring of short span bridges by
an inspection vehicle. How to screen health condition of short span bridges in terms of the
drive-by bridge inspection is described. Feasibility of the drive-by bridge inspection is
investigated through a scaled laboratory moving vehicle experiment. The feasibility of using an
instrumented vehicle to detect the natural frequency and changes in structural damping of a
model bridge is observed. Observations also demonstrate possibility of diagnosis of bridges by
comparing patterns of identified dynamic parameters of bridges through a periodical
monitoring. It is confirmed that the method for damage identification under a moving vehicle
identifies the damage location and severity well.
