Since the 1980s, different devices based on superelastic alloys have been developed to fulfill orthodontic applications. Particularly in the last decades several researches have been carried out to evaluate the mechanical behavior of Ni-Ti alloys, including their tensile, torsion and fatigue properties. However, studies regarding the dependence of elastic properties on residence time of Ni-Ti wires in the oral cavity are scarce. Such approach is essential since metallic alloys are submitted to mechanical stresses during orthodontic treatment as well as pH and temperature fluctuations. The goal of the present contribution is to provide elastic stress-strain results to guide the orthodontic choice between martensitic thermal activated and austenitic superelastic Ni-Ti alloys. From the point of view of an orthodontist, the selection of appropriate materials and the correct maintenance of the orthodontic apparatus are essential needs during clinical treatment. The present work evaluated the elastic behavior of Ni-Ti alloy wires with diameters varying from 0.014 to 0.020 inches, submitted to hysteresis tensile tests with 8% strain. Tensile tests were performed after periods of use of 1, 2 and 3 months in the oral cavity of patients submitted to orthodontic treatment. The results from the hysteresis tests allowed to exam the strain range covered by isostress lines upon loading and unloading, as well as the residual strain after unloading for both superelastic and thermal activated Ni-Ti wires. Superelastic Ni-Ti wires exhibited higher load isostress values compared to thermal activated wires. It was found that such differences in the load isostress values can increase with increasing residence time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength of orthodontic wires bonded onto the enamel with cyanoacrylate ester. To obtain the specimens, 120 human premolars (extracted for orthodontic or periodontal reasons) were included in acrylic blocks of rapid polymerization with three teeth each. Four groups were formed with ten specimens each. In the specimens, a dental splint model was made with cyanoacrylate ester and round stainless steel wire. In groups I, II and III, cyanoacrylate ester was used with round steel wires, with variation in diameter: 0.014 inches; 0.016 inches and 0.018 inches, respectively. In group IV, round steel wire 0.018 inches was used with photo polymerizing resin composite with previous acid etching. The adhesive force of the materials was measured in two points under the action of the tensiometer (ETM-USA). The number of loose wires was counted along with those that remained fixed according to the different levels of force applied because of the direction of the tensile force (vertical or horizontal) and the diameter of the wire used. The data obtained were first submitted to a descriptive analysis and then submitted to a statistical analysis (Friedman's Test and Dunn's Test of Multiple Comparison - Epi-info 3.2). Within the limitations of the experimental conditions presented, the cyanoacrylate ester or 'Super Bonder (R)' maintained bonded to enamel and steel wires (0.016 and 0.018 inches) during the tensile strength tests under different levels of applied forces.

This study evaluated the effect of heat treatment on CrNi stainless steel orthodontic archwires. Half of forty archwires of each thickness - 0.014 (0.35 mm), 0.016 (0.40 mm), 0.018 (0.45 mm) and 0.020 (0.50 mm) (totalling 160 archwires) - were subjected to heat treatment while the remainder were not. All of the archwires had their individual thickness measured in the anterior and posterior regions using AutoCad 2000 software before and after compressive and tensile strength testing. The data was statistically analysed utilising multivariance ANOVA at a 5% significance level. All archwires without heat treatment that were subjected to tensile strength testing presented with anterior opening, which was more accentuated in the 0.020 archwires. In the posterior region, the opening produced by the tensile force was more accentuated in the archwires without heat treatment. There was greater stability in the thermally treated archwires, especially those subjected to tensile strength testing, which indicates that the heat treatment of orthodontic archwires establishes a favourable and indispensable condition to preserve the intercanine width.

Background: Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances often experience an absolute increase in the number of Streptococci mutans colony-forming units (cfu). The aim of this investigation was to study the development of biofilm and S. mutans cfu in connection with stainless steel ligatures and elastomeric rings in orthodontic patients treated with and without 0.4% stannous fluoride gel (SFG). Material: Forty-seven patients were divided into 2 groups: those treated with 0.4% SFG for 4 minutes (experimental) and those without 0.4% SFG (control). In each patient, elastomeric rings were used for ligation on 1 side of the dental arch midline, and stainless steel ligatures were used on the opposite side. Saliva samples were collected before and after appliance placement. At 15 and 30 days after appliance placement, biofilm samples from the stainless steel ligatures and the elastomeric rings were collected and subjected to microbiologic procedures and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Results: The numbers of S. mutans cfu in the saliva and biofilm were not statistically different between the teeth fitted with elastomeric rings and stainless steel ligatures, or between the experimental and control groups. SEM analysis showed biofilm formation on both ligature ties. Conclusions: Topical application of 0.4% SFG in orthodontic patients with elastomeric rings or stainless steel ligatures does not cause a significant decrease in S. mutans cfu in the saliva and biofilm. To assess the occurrence, extension, and severity of gingival margin alterations in a sample of youth after orthodontic treatment. Records from 209 Caucasian adolescents (118 female and 91 male) before and after orthodontic treatment were selected. Patients presented a mean age at the beginning of orthodontic treatment of 11.20 ± 1.86 years and a final mean age of 14.72 ± 1.83 years. Class I and II patients with mandibular incisors and canines that were completely erupted and with spacing or crowding not exceeding 4 mm were evaluated. The presence of gingival recession on the labial surface of the mandibular anterior teeth was evaluated in intraoral photographs and casts made before and after treatment. The proportion of patients with gingival recession after treatment was statistically higher than at the beginning (P<.001). After orthodontic treatment, gingival recession was not present in any of the teeth for 63.6% of the patients; in 29.2% of the patients, recession was present in at least 1 tooth. In terms of severity, the majority of affected teeth (47%) presented gingival recession less than 2 mm and in 2% more than 4 mm. It may be concluded that alterations in the gingival margin, especially gingival recession, occur in patients after orthodontic therapy, but the extent and severity of this finding are low. Introduction Cette recherche constitue une étude clinique descriptive, visant à évaluer la douleur durant le traitement orthodontique avec boîtiers auto-ligaturants passifs et actifs. Matériel et méthode L'étude a été effectuée chez 39 patients (18 garçons, 21 filles), âge moyen 14 (entre 11 et 19 ans). Deux types de boîtiers auto-ligaturants ont été utilisés (SPEED n=20 et Damon n=19). Pour évaluer la douleur, un questionnaire a été élaboré par l'équipe de recherche. L’étude comportait 4 phases, c’est-à-dire l’évaluation de la douleur suite à l’insertion des 4 premiers fils orthodontiques du traitement de chaque patient (0.016 Supercable, 016 CuNiTi, 016X022 CuNiTi, 019X025 CuNiTi). Le même questionnaire était utilisé lors de chaque phase et le questionnaire comprenait 6 différents temps (T0: avant l’insertion du fil orthodontique, T1: immédiatement suite à l’insertion du fil, T2: 5h après l’insertion, T3: 24h après l’insertion, T4: 3 jours après l’insertion, T5: une semaine après l’insertion, T6: 4 semaines après l’insertion) suite à l’insertion de chaque fil. L’échelle visuelle analogue (EVA) et la version courte du questionnaire de Saint-Antoine ont été utilisés afin d’évaluer la douleur. Les données des EVA entre les groupes ont été comparées en utilisant le U test Mann-Whitney. Résultats et discussion Pour les deux premiers fils et pour tous les temps étudiés, il n’y avait pas de différence statistiquement significative entre les deux groupes (SPEED et Damon). Cependant, au moment de l’insertion (T0) du troisième fil (016X022 CuNiTi), parmi les patients ayant rapporté de la douleur (SPEED 47.1%, Damon 55.6%), le groupe Damon a rapporté une douleur significativement plus élevée que le groupe SPEED (p=0.018), (EVA moyenne SPEED=14.14±8.55, Damon=33.85±19.64). Trois jours après l’insertion du troisième fil, toujours parmi les patients ayant rapporté de la douleur (SPEED 23.5%, Damon 33.4%), la douleur était significativement plus élevée chez le groupe Damon que chez le groupe SPEED (p=0.008), (EVA moyenne SPEED=8.74±4.87, Damon=25.15±9.69). La plupart des analgésiques ont été pris suite à la pose du premier fil au temps T2 (5h) et T3 (24h). Il n’y avait pas de différence statistiquement significative entre les groupes en ce qui a trait au nombre de patients qui prenaient des analgésiques. La douleur n’a pas affecté le style de vie pour la grande majorité des patients. Les mots descriptifs sensoriels « tiraillement », « étau » et « élancement » et le mot affectif « énervant » étaient le plus souvent utilisés. Conclusion Les patients du groupe Damon ont ressenti significativement plus de douleur que les patients du groupe SPEED à l’insertion du troisième fil et trois jours suite à l’insertion. Plus de patients ont pris des médicaments pour la douleur avec le premier fil et le style de vie n’était pas affecté pour une majorité de patients. « Tiraillement », « étau », « élancement » et « énervant » étaient les mots descriptifs les plus utilisés par les patients pour décrire leur douleur.

Objective: To investigate the degree of debris, roughness, and friction of stainless steel orthodontic archwires before and after clinical use.Materials and Methods: For eight individuals, two sets of three brackets (n = 16) each were bonded from the first molar to the first premolar. A passive segment of 0.019- x 0.025-inch stainless steel archwire was inserted into the brackets and tied by elastomeric ligature. Debris level (via scanning electron microscopy), roughness, and frictional force were evaluated as-received and after 8 weeks of intraoral exposure. Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical analysis at the .05 level of significance.Results: There were significant increases in the level of debris (P = .0004), roughness of orthodontic wires (P = .002), and friction (P = .0001) after intraoral exposure. Significant positive correlations (P < .05) were observed between these three variables.Conclusion: Stainless steel rectangular wires, when exposed to the intraoral environment for 8 weeks, showed a significant increase in the degree of debris and surface roughness, causing an increase in friction between the wire and bracket during the mechanics of sliding.
