Quantitative information on metazoan meiofaunal abundance and biomass was obtained from three continental shelf (at 40, 100 and 200 m depth) and four deep-sea stations (at 540, 700, 940 and 1540 m depth) in the Cretan Sea (South Aegean Sea, NE Mediterranean). Samples were collected on a seasonal basis (from August 1994 to September 1995) with the use of a multiple corer. Meiofaunal abundance and biomass on the continental shelf of the Cretan Sea were high, in contrast to the extremely low values reported for the bathyal sediments that showed values comparable to those reported for abyssal and hadal environments. In order to explain the spatial and seasonal changes in metazoan meiofauna these data were compared with: (1) the concentrations of 'food indicators' (such as proteins, lipids, soluble carbohydrates and CPE) (2) the bacterial biomass (3) the flux of labile organic compounds to the sea floor at a fixed station (D7, 1540 m depth). Highly significant relationships between meiofaunal parameters and CPE, protein and lipid concentrations and bacterial biomass were found. Most of the indicators of food quality and quantity (such as CPE, proteins and carbohydrates) showed a clear seasonality with highest values in February and lowest in September. Such changes were more evident on the continental shelf rather than at deeper depths. On the continental shelf, significant seasonal changes in meiofaunal density were related to changes in the input of labile organic carbon whereas meiofaunal assemblages on the deep-sea stations showed time-lagged changes in response to the food input recorded in February 95. At all deep-sea stations meiofaunal density increased with a time lag of 2 months. Indications for a time-lagged meiofaunal response to the food inputs were also provided by the increase in nauplii densities during May 95 and the increase in individual biomass of nematodes, copepods and polychaetes between February and May 1995. The lack of strong seasonal changes in deep sea meiofaunal density suggests that the supply of organic matter below 500 m is not strong enough to support a significant meiofaunal development. Below 700 m depth >92% of the total biomass in the sediment was represented by bacteria. The ratio of bacterial to meiofaunal biomass increased with increasing water depth indicating that bacteria are probably more effective than meiofauna in exploiting refractory organic compounds. These data lead us to hypothesise that the deep-sea sediments of the Cretan Sea are largely dependent upon a benthic microbial loop.

15 samples obtained with Beyer's epibenthic closing net were studied quantitatively. The numbers of epi- and endobenthic animals were found to be correlated with the volume of sediment in the samples. Among the planktonic components, calanoid copepodes were strongly predominant. In the samples obtained on the Great Meteor Seamount, very much larger numbers of these animals were caught in the daytime than at night. Possible explanations for this difference are suggested.

1. On the cruises 3 and 15 of R.V. "Meteor" 6 grab samples, and 6 hauls with the 6 m Agassiztrawl were taken and at 2 stations the deep sea camera was lowered. This material gave quantitative results on the meiofauna and minimum counts of the macrofauna. 2. The nematodes constitute nearly 95% of the meiofauna, the copepoda only 2%. With increasing sediment depth the density of animals decrease gradually. In the uppermost centimeter of sediment 42.6% of the meiofauna are found while only 3.7% live in layer 6-7 cm. Meiofauna weight ranges from 0.6-5.7 mg/25 m**2 surface i.e. 0.24-2.8 g/m**2. 3. Mean numbers of individuals and weights show standard errors of 20-30 %. As an approximate average values for further considerations the weight of the meiofauna in the area was taken as 1 g/m**2 4. Quantitative information on the macrofauna is derived from the trawls and the photographs for the actinia Chitonanthus abyssorum only, which is found in the rate of 1 individual/36-72 m**2, but seems to be less abundant generally. 5. Animal density does not decrease steadily from nearshore to offshore biocoenoses, i.e. generally with increasing depth. The decrease is more pronounced for macro- than for meiofauna. For the deep sea the weight proportion of macrofauna : meiofauna is of the order of 1 : 1. 6. With the assumption, that adaptation of metabolism to deep sea conditions is similar in macro- and meiofauna total metabolism of invertebrates is ascribed to meiofauna to more than 80%. 7. The structure of the biocoenosis of the deep sea floor is characterized by the meiofauna living on and in the sediment and by the dominance of sediment feeders in the macrofauna. 8. Considering the large numbets and high partition rates of bacteria a comparative large part of the metabolism in the deep sea sediment must be ascribed to bacteria. This favours the hypothesis, that with increasing depth and decreasing addition of organic material to the sediment, the importance of meiofauna and microorganisms for total metabolism increases. 9. Considering the different modes of food transport to the deep sea environment, i.e. sinking of dead particles, transport by vertical migration of organisms, aggregation of organic particles, adsorption of dissoloved organic substance to inorganic particles, and heterotrophy, the sediment may be assumed to contain more food for invertebrates than the water above the bottom. 10. Suspensions feeders of macrofauna are fixed to hard substrates in the sediment surface. Some of them are shown to bend themselves down to the bottom in underwater photographs. This suggests the idea that some deep sea suspension feeders partly depend on food from the sediment surface, on which they feed directly.

A general study of structure, biomass, and dynamic estimates on meiofauna was carried out during PREFLEX (1975) and FLEX (1976), in 117- 141 m water depth. On the basis of these data an attempt was made to estimate meiofauna production, and this is discussed in relation to the energy input from the spring phytoplankton bloom. Sampling was performed at five stations, but only the stations 1, 4, and 5 were covered by a complete series from August 1975 to July 1976. At each station, from four replicate box core samples, two were withdrawn to study the abundance, distribution, and biomass of meiofauna, the content of chloroplastic pigment equivalents (CPE), and chemical and grain size analyses. At all stations grain size fell in the range of fine sand having median diameters (MD) of < 125 µm. From station 1 to 5 an increase in MD was observed. Highest values of CPE (7.81 µg m l**-1) and organic matter (4.7 %) were obtained in June and July (1976)/ August (1975), respectively. Meiofauna abundance was fairly uniform at all stations examined. Station 1 displayed maximal numbers during the whole investigation period. The abundance per 100 cm**2 varied between 15,550 and 34,900 organisms. All meiofauna studied both in total and as separate taxa showed annual cycles of abundance. Low abundance values were recorded during early summer, and maximum values during winter. High numbers of Foraminifera were obtained for August 1975 (9,460 per 100 cm**2) and July 1976 (9,710 per 100 cm**2). From December to June the values decreased from 3,280 to 1,030 per 100 cm**2. At station 1 maximum values of meiofauna biomass were recorded ranging from 1.5 to 2.7 g DWT m**-2. The mean meiofauna dry weight amounted to 2.1 g DWT m**-2. Based on minimum production, the P/B ratio for the area of station 1 might have a mean of 1.4. Taking into consideration generation times we believe that a turnover ratio of 2 is a conservative value for the Fladen Ground meiofauna. The annual production would amount to 4.2 g DWT m**-2 yr**-1. This is 27.5 % of the energy supply during the spring phytoplankton bloom, which is channelled into the meiofauna. The hypothesis is put forward that the energetic strategy of deep offshore meiofauna differs distinctively from that of shallow inshore meiofauna. While the shallow inshore meiofauna show a relatively fast response to organic matter input, the deep offshore meiofauna reacts much more slowly, the food energy consumption seems to be spread out over a longer period.

Chronic weight loss in marmosets is often associated with wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS), an important disease that occurs in callitrichid colonies around the world. Even though its etiology is very difficult to determine, particular variables, such as weight loss, diarrhea and alopecia, associated or not with infestation in the pancreatic ducts with Trichospirura leptossoma (Nematoda: Thelazioidea), seem to be linked with the syndrome. This study investigated the histopathology of the lungs, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts and pancreatic ducts of six common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) suffering from severe non-diarrheic weight loss. Three individuals died naturally and the other three were euthanized. Microscopic findings showed the presence of adult flukes (Platynosomum) in the liver. These flukes, which provoke common infection in cats, were also observed inside the gallbladder as well as in the intra and extrahepatic bile ducts in common marmosets. Portal fibrosis was observed in two animals, which developed chronic fibrosing hepatopathy (biliary pattern, grade 3). The disease progresses without diarrhea and without pancreatic lesions or infestation. With the rogression, the animals presented with ascending cholangitis, cholestasis and portal fibrosis, sometimes culminating in secondary biliary cirrhosis. Therefore, this nfirmity, associated with chronic weight loss in common marmosets, could be another tiological factor linked with WMS

The parasites fauna of 491 specimens of Sander lucioperca, Linnaeus 1758 (246 specimens) and catfish, Silurus glanis, Linnaeus 1758 (245 specimens) in different size from Aras Reservoir situated in North —west of the Iran was investigated. During 2006-2007 Totally 16 parasite species were recorded. The most various parasites was found in catfish (10 species) while the lowest number was recorded in Sander lucioperca (6 species). Among them, however three genera of protozoa (Trichodina, Vorticella, Ichthyophthirius), two genera of Monogenea (Gyrodactylus, Silurodiscoides), Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Acanthocephala and Annelida one species each (Diplostomum, Protocephalus, Eustrongylides, Neoechinorhynchus, Pisicola) and two crustacean genera (Argulus and Lernea) recorded and we can come to conclusion in comparison with the earlier data the actual parasite fauna of two hosts has been greatly improved. According to the present study the prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of parasites species of both hosts were highly influenced by seasons of the year. Some species found, however show a tendency to be more abundant ides Trichodina sp., Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Silurodiscoides vistolensis, Protocephalus osculatus respectively. Most parasites species live in gills and skin, where is highly sensitive to some pathogens parasites species (Trichodina, Vorticella, Ichthyophthirius, Pisicola geometra, Argulus foliaceus; Lernea) and While some are specialist (Silurodiscoides vistolensis and Silurodiscoides siluri) other more or less generalist (ichthyophthirius).

The aim of this study was to investigate the component community of parasite metazoans of Piaractus brachypomus in the lower Amazon River, northern Brazil. From 34 necropsied fish, 27,384 metazoan parasites were collected, such as Anacanthorus spathulatus, Mymarothecium viatorum and Notozothecium janauachensis (Monogenoidea); Spectatus spectatus and Contracaecum sp (Nematoda); Clinostomum marginatum and Dadaytrema oxycephala (Digenea); and Argulus carteri and Ergasilus sp. (Crustacea). The dominant species was S. spectatus followed by monogenoidean species, and there was aggregated dispersion of parasites, except for D. oxycephala and Contracaecum sp., which presented random dispersion. Positive correlation among the abundance of the three monogenoideans species were found, thus indicating that there was no competition between the species of these parasites on the gills of hosts. The abundances of some parasite species showed positive correlations with the size of the hosts, but the condition factor of the fish was not affected by the parasitism levels. It showed that this host had a metazoan community characterized by high species richness of metazoans, low evenness and high diversity of parasites, with prevalence of endoparasites, including larval stages. This was the first record of C. marginatum, A. carteri, Ergasilus sp. and Contracaecum sp. for P. brachypomus.

The use of silvopastoral systems (SPS) can be a good alternative to reduce the environmental impacts of livestock breeding in Brazil. Despite the advantages offered by public policies, many producers hesitate to use this system. One of the reasons is the lack of information on health and productivity of cattle raised under these conditions. The experiment reported here was designed to compare the behavior of infection by gastrointestinal nematodes and weight gain of beef cattle raised in a SPS and a conventional pasture system. We monitored the number of eggs per gram of feces, the prevalent nematode genus, data on climate, forage availability, weight gain and packed cell volume (PCV) of the animals bred in the two systems. The infection by nematodes was significantly higher in the cattle raised in the SPS (p\0.05). The coprocultures revealed the presence of nematodes of the genera Haemonchus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus, in both systems, but the mean infestation rates of Haemonchus and Cooperia were higher in the SPS (p\0.05). The average of PCV values did not differ between the cattle in the two systems. The individual weight gain and stocking rate in the period did not vary between the systems (p[0.05). Despite the higher prevalence of nematodes in the SPS, no negative impact was detected on the animals? weight gain and health. The results of this experiment indicate that under the conditions studied, there is no need to alter the parasite management to assure good productive performance of cattle

Few studies have been performed with parasites of marine and estuarine fish in southern Brazil. In the present study, unpublished results show the ways of parasitism of juvenile mullet by parasites. The toxicity of formaldehyde and the effectiveness of this chemotherapy in controlling parasites in reared juvenile mullet Mugil liza were also studied. Juvenile mullets (1 +/- 0.26 g; 4.1 +/- 0.4 cm) were exposed to different concentrations of 37% formaldehyde: control group and five formaldehyde concentrations which were tested: T1 (13.5), T2 (21.6), T3 (40.5), T4 (81) and T5 (135) mg L-1 with 8 fish per repetition in triplicate. To verify the drug effectiveness in parasitic control, juvenile mullets were exposed to 1 h prophylactic bath of 37% formaldehyde with a control group and five formaldehyde concentrations: T1 (67.5), T2 (135), T3 (270), T4 (405) and T5 (540) mg L-1, 8 fish per repetition in triplicate. Ligophorus cf. uruguayensis (Monogenoidea: Ancyrocephalidae) and Solostamenides cf. platyorchis (Monogenoidea: Microcotylidae) were identified in the gills. Digenea and Nematoda were observed in the intestines. This is the first occurrence of S. cf. platyorchis in Brazil. During the toxicity test, the LC50-96 h was estimated at 20.77 mg L-1 of formaldehyde. During the 1 h formaldehyde prophylactic bath, all parasites were eliminated in formaldehyde concentrations between 135 and 540 mg L-1. High survival rate was observed in all treatments. Values of prevalence and intensity of infestation observed in this study showed the potential damage caused by Monogenoidea to mullet. Formaldehyde baths with 135 mg L-1 are recommended to control Monogenoidea in mullet and the safe limits for formaldehyde use were presented. O nematóide Heterodera glycines Ichinohe é considerado o parasita mais destrutivo da soja (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). A doença causada pela infestação desse nematóide, primeiramente obserada no Japão, recebeu a denominção de "nanismo amarelo", devido aos sintomas por ela produzidos nas plantas de soja infecatadas.
