Structural and stereochemical revision of isocyanide and isothiocyanate amphilectenes from the Caribbean marine sponge Cribochalina sp.

The absolute stereochemistry of amphilectene metabolites from Cribochalina sp. has been revised by a detailed NMR spectroscopic study of the Mosher ester derivatives of a related alcohol. The relative stereochemistry of the previously described amphilectenes has been reinvestigated and reassigned on the basis of the X-ray structural analysis carried out on one of them. Assignment of absolute configuration of cyclic secondary amines by NMR techniques using Mosher's method: a general procedure exemplified with (-)-isoanabasine

A general procedure to determine the absolute configuration of cyclic secondary amines with Mosher's NMR method is demonstrated, with assignment of absolute configuration of isoanabasine as an example. Each Mosher amide can adopt two stable conformations (named rotamers) caused by hindered rotation around amide C-N bond. Via a three-step structural analysis of four rotamers, the absolute configuration of (-)-isoanabasine is deduced to be (R) on the basis of Newman projections, which makes it easy to understand and clarify the application of Mosher's method to cyclic secondary amines. Furthermore, it was observed that there was an unexpected ratio of rotamers of Mosher amide derived from (R)-isoanabasine and (R)-Mosher acid. This phenomenon implied that it is necessary to distinguish the predominant rotamer from the minor one prior to determining the absolute configuration while using this technique.

Viewshed Analysis of the Lands of Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance

The Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance (BRCA) has acquired a great deal of land in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine and is currently in negotiations on many pieces of land throughout the area. Data available online from the Maine Office of GIS, and data from the BRCA were used to carry out this analysis. One area of interest is Mount Phillip, the summit of which the BRCA recently acquired. There is a good view to the south of the mountain, but the potential view to the east and north is in question. This study analyzed the view from the top of the mountain, focusing on two landmarks: Mosher Hill to the east, and North Pond to the north. The analysis shows that both Mosher Hill and North Pond can be seen well from Mount Phillip. These results could help the BRCA both by adding weight to their negotiations to protect Mosher Hill, as well as influencing their decision whether or not to thin part of the forest on Mount Phillip to open up the view of North Pond that is currently blocked.
