Recent technological development has enabled research- ers to gather data from different performance scenarios while considering players positioning and action events within a specific time frame. This technology varies from global positioning systems to radio frequency devices and computer vision tracking, to name the most common, and aims to collect players’ time motion data and enable the dynamical analysis of performance. Team sports—and in particular, invasion games—present a complex dynamic by nature based on the interaction between 2 opposing sides trying to outperform 1 another. During match and training situations, players’ actions are coupled to their performance context at different interaction levels. As expected, ball, teammates’, and opponents’ positioning play an important role in this interaction process. But other factors, such as final score, teams’ development level, and players’ expertise, seem to affect the match dynamics. In this symposium, we will focus on how different constraints affect invasion games dynamics during both match and training situations. This relation will be established while underpinning the importance of these effects to game teaching and performance optimization. Regarding the match, different performance indicators based on spatial-temporal relations between players and teams will be presented to reveal the interaction processes that form the crucial component of game analysis. Considering the training, this symposium will address the relationship of small-sided games with full- sized matches and will present how players’ dynamical interaction affects different performance indicators.

Non-contact landings have been identified as a common activity associated with injury in netball. Investigating injury risk factors during landing via laboratory-based analysis warrants the performance of sportspecific landing tasks with the inclusion of “game- like” factors to enhance ecological validity of testing protocols. Understanding how players perform landing tasks in a competitive environment is, therefore, essential.

The purpose of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of in-game landings performed by netball players, with regard to the landing techniques used and game events surrounding these landings; with the intent of providing information to enhance the ecological validity of laboratory-based testing environments. Landings were categorised according to landing technique and game events surrounding the landing.


A total of 1328 landings were observed across the three matches analysed. Differences in the distribution of landing techniques performed were seen across the various court positions. Specific game events were frequently present regardless of the landing technique performed. However, certain game events were found to occur more frequently with specific landing techniques. The findings from this study provide researchers with data to inform evidence-based decisions and enhance the ecological validity of laboratory testing environments when investigating landings in a netball sporting context.

El análisis del rendimiento en deportes juega un papel esencial en el fútbol profesional. Aunque el estudio del análisis del juego en fútbol se ha utilizado desde diferentes ámbitos y situaciones, todavía existen diferentes aspectos y componentes del juego que siguen sin estar estudiados. En este sentido existen diferentes aspectos que deben de superar los estudios previos centrados en el componente descriptivo tales como el uso de variables/ indicadores de rendimiento que no se han definido ni estudiado, la validez de los métodos observaciones que no han sido testados con los softwares específicos en fútbol, la aplicación y utilidad de los resultados, así como las limitaciones del estudio de las variables situacionales/contextuales. Con el objetivo de cubrir las citadas limitaciones se han diseñado 6 estudios independientes e inter-relacionados que tratan de estudiar los aspectos anteriormente referidos. El primer estudio evalua la fiabilidad inter-observadores de las estadísticas de juego de la empresa privada OPTA Sportsdata, estos datos son la muestra de estudio de la presente tesis doctoral. Dos grupos de observadores experimentados se requieren para analizar un partido de la liga española de manera independiente. Los resultados muestran que los eventos de equipos y porteros codificados por los inter-operadores alcanzan un acuerdo muy bueno (valores kappa entre 0.86 y 0.94). La validez inter-observadores de las acciones de juego y los datos de jugadores individuales se evaluó con elevados niveles de acuerdo (valores del coeficiente de correlación intraclase entre 0.88 hasta 1.00, el error típico estandarizado variaba entre 0.00 hasta 0.37). Los resultados sugieren que las estadísticas de juego registradas por los operadores de la empresa OPTA Sportsdata están bien entrenados y son fiables. El segundo, tercer y cuarto estudio se centran en resaltar la aplicabilidad del análisis de rendimiento en el fútbol así como para explicar en profundidad las influencias de las variables situacionales. Utilizando la técnica de los perfiles de rendimiento de jugadores y equipos de fútbol se puede evaluar y comparar de manera gráfica, fácil y visual. Así mismo, mediante esta técnica se puede controlar el efecto de las variables situacionales (localización del partido, nivel del equipo y del oponente, y el resultado final del partido). Los perfiles de rendimiento de porteros (n = 46 porteros, 744 observaciones) y jugadores de campo (n = 409 jugadores, 5288 observaciones) de la primera division professional de fútbol Española (La Liga, temporada 2012-13), los equipos (n = 496 partidos, 992 observaciones) de la UEFA Champions League (temporadas 2009-10 a 2012-13) fueron analizados registrando la media, desviación típica, mediana, cuartiles superior e inferior y el recuento de valores de cada indicador de rendimiento y evento, los cuales se presentaron en su forma tipificada y normalizada. Los valores medios de los porteros de los equipos de diferentes niveles de La Liga y de los equipos de diferente nivel de la UEFA Champions League cuando jugaban en diferentes contextos de juego y situaciones (variables situacionales) fueron comparados utilizando el ANOVA de un factor y la prueba t para muestras independientes (localización del partido, diferencias entre casa y fuera), y fueron establecidos en los perfiles de red después de unificar todos los registros en la misma escala derivada con valores estandarizados. Mientras que las diferencias de rendimiento entre los jugadores de los mejores equipos (Top3) y los peores (Bottom3) fueron comparados mediante el uso de diferencias en la magnitud del tamaño del efecto. El quinto y el sexto estudio analizaban el rendimiento del fútbol desde un punto de vista de predicción del rendimiento. El modelo linear general y el modelo lineal general mixto fue empleado para analizar la magnitud de las relaciones de los indicadores y estadísticas de juego con el resultado final del partido en función del tipo de partido (partidos ajustados o todos los partidos) en la fase de grupos de la Copa del Mundo 2014 de Brasil (n = 48 partidos, 38 partidos ajustados) y La Liga 2012-13 (n = 320 partidos ajustados). Las relaciones fueron evaluadas mediante las inferencias en la magnitud de las diferencias y se expresaron como partidos extra ganados o perdidos por cada 10 partidos mediante la variable calculada en 2 desviaciones típicas. Los resultados mostraron que, para los 48 partidos de la fase de grupos de la Copa del Mundo 2014, nueve variables tuvieron un efecto positive en la probabilidad de ganar (tiros, tiros a puerta, tiros de contraataque, tiros dentro del área, posesión de balón, pases en corto, media de secuencia de pases, duelos aéreos y entradas), cuatro tuvieron efectos negativos (tiros bloqueados, centros, regates y tarjetas amarillas), y otras 12 variables tenían efectos triviales o poco claros. Mientras que los 38 partidos ajustados, el efecto de duelos aéreos y tarjetas amarillas fueron triviales y claramente negativos respectivamente. En la La Liga, existió un efecto moderado positive para cada equipo para los tiros a puerta (3.4 victorias extras por cada 10 partidos; 99% IC ±1.0), y un efecto positivo reducido para tiros totales (1.7 victorias extrsa; ±1.0). Los efectos de la mayoría de los eventos se han relacionado con la posesión del balón, la cual obtuvo efectos negativos entre equipos (1.2 derrotas extras; ±1.0) pero un efecto positivo pequeño entra equipos (1.7 victorias extras; ±1.4). La localización del partido mostró un efecto positive reducido dentro de los equipos (1.9 victorias extras; ±0.9). Los resultados obtenidos en los perfiles y el modelado del rendimiento permiten ofrecer una información detallada y avanzada para el entrenamiento, la preparación previa a los partidos, el control de la competición y el análisis post-partido, así como la evaluación e identificación del talento de los jugadores. ABSTRACT Match performance analysis plays an important role in the modern professional football. Although the research in football match analysis is well-developed, there are still some issues and problems remaining in this field, which mainly include the lack of operational definitions of variables, reliability issues, applicability of the findings, the lack of contextual/situational variables, and focusing too much on descriptive and comparative analysis. In order to address these issues, six independent but related studies were conducted in the current thesis. The first study evaluated the inter-operator reliability of football match statistics from OPTA Sportsdata Company which is the data resourse of the thesis. Two groups of experienced operators were required to analyse a Spanish league match independently in the experiment. Results showed that team events and goalkeeper actions coded by independent operators reached a very good agreement (kappa values between 0.86 and 0.94). The inter-operator reliability of match actions and events of individual outfield players was also tested to be at a high level (intra-class correlation coefficients ranged from 0.88 to 1.00, standardised typical error varied from 0.00 to 0.37). These results suggest that the football match statistics collected by well-trained operators from OPTA Sportsdata Company are reliable. The second, third and fourth study aims to enhance the applicability of football match performance analysis and to explore deeply the influences of situational variables. By using a profiling technique, technical and tactical performances of football players and teams can be interpreted, evaluated and compared more easily and straightforwardly, meanwhile, influences and effects from situational variables (match location, strength of team and opposition, and match outcome) on the performances can be properly incorporated. Performance profiles of goalkeepers (n = 46 goalkeepers, 744 full match observations) and outfield players (n = 409 players, 5288 full match observations) from the Spanish First Division Professional Football League (La Liga, season 2012-13), teams (n = 496 matches, 992 observations) from UEFA Champions League (seasons 2009-10 to 2012-13) were set up by presenting the mean, standard deviation, median, lower and upper quartiles of the count values of each performance-related match action and event to represent their typical performances and spreads. Means of goalkeeper from different levels of team in La Liga and teams of different strength in UEFA Champions League when playing under different situational conditions were compared by using one-way ANOVA and independent sample t test (for match location, home and away differences), and were plotted into the same radar charts after unifying all the event counts by standardised score. While differences between the performances of outfield players from Top3 and from Bottom3 teams were compared by magnitude-based inferences. The fifth and sixth study aims to move from the descriptive and comparative football match analysis to a more predictive one. Generalised linear modelling and generalised mixed linear modelling were undertaken to quantify relationships of the performance-related match events, actions and variables with the match outcome in different types of games (close games and all games) in the group stage of 2014 Brazil FIFA World Cup (n = 48 games, 38 close games) and La Liga 2012-13 (n = 320 close games). Relationships were evaluated with magnitude-based inferences and were expressed as extra matches won or lost per 10 matches for an increase of two standard deviations of a variable. Results showed that, for all the 48 games in the group stage of 2014 FIFA World Cup, nine variables had clearly positive effects on the probability of winning (shot, shot on target, shot from counter attack, shot from inside area, ball possession, short pass, average pass streak, aerial advantage, and tackle), four had clearly negative effects (shot blocked, cross, dribble and red card), other 12 variabless had either trivial or unclear effects. While for the 38 close games, the effects of aerial advantage and yellow card turned to trivial and clearly negative, respectively. In the La Liga, there was a moderate positive within-team effect from shots on target (3.4 extra wins per 10 matches; 99% confidence limits ±1.0), and a small positive within-team effect from total shots (1.7 extra wins; ±1.0). Effects of most other match events were related to ball possession, which had a small negative within-team effect (1.2 extra losses; ±1.0) but a small positive between-team effect (1.7 extra wins; ±1.4). Game location showed a small positive within-team effect (1.9 extra wins; ±0.9). The aim of this thesis was threefold, firstly, to compare current player tracking technology in a single game of soccer. Secondly, to investigate the running requirements of elite women’s soccer, in particular the use and application of athlete tracking devices. Finally, how can game style be quantified and defined. Study One compared four different match analysis systems commonly used in both research and applied settings: video-based time-motion analysis, a semi-automated multiple camera based system, and two commercially available Global Positioning System (GPS) based player tracking systems at 1 Hertz (Hz) and 5 Hz respectively. A comparison was made between each of the systems when recording the same game. Total distance covered during the match for the four systems ranged from 10 830 ± 770 m (semi-automated multiple camera based system) to 9 510 ± 740m (video-based time-motion analysis). At running speeds categorised as high-intensity running (>15 km⋅h-1), the semi-automated multiple camera based system reported the highest distance of 2 650 ± 530 m with video-based time-motion analysis reporting the least amount of distance covered with 1 610 ± 370 m. At speeds considered to be sprinting (>20 km⋅h-1), the video-based time-motion analysis reported the highest value (420 ± 170 m) and 1 Hz GPS units the lowest value (230 ± 160 m). These results demonstrate there are differences in the determination of the absolute distances, and that comparison of results between match analysis systems should be made with caution. Currently, there is no criterion measure for these match analysis methods and as such it was not possible to determine if one system was more accurate than another. Study Two provided an opportunity to apply player-tracking technology (GPS) to measure activity profiles and determine the physical demands of Australian international level women soccer players. In four international women’s soccer games, data was collected on a total of 15 Australian women soccer players using a 5 Hz GPS based athlete tracking device. Results indicated that Australian women soccer players covered 9 140 ± 1 030 m during 90 min of play. The total distance covered by Australian women was less than the 10 300 m reportedly covered by female soccer players in the Danish First Division. However, there was no apparent difference in the estimated "#$%&', as measured by multi-stage shuttle tests, between these studies. This study suggests that contextual information, including the “game style” of both the team and opposition may influence physical performance in games. Study Three examined the effect the level of the opposition had on the physical output of Australian women soccer players. In total, 58 game files from 5 Hz athlete-tracking devices from 13 international matches were collected. These files were analysed to examine relationships between physical demands, represented by total distance covered, high intensity running (HIR) and distances covered sprinting, and the level of the opposition, as represented by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) ranking at the time of the match. Higher-ranking opponents elicited less high-speed running and greater low-speed activity compared to playing teams of similar or lower ranking. The results are important to coaches and practitioners in the preparation of players for international competition, and showed that the differing physical demands required were dependent on the level of the opponents. The results also highlighted the need for continued research in the area of integrating contextual information in team sports and demonstrated that soccer can be described as having dynamic and interactive systems. The influence of playing strategy, tactics and subsequently the overall game style was highlighted as playing a significant part in the physical demands of the players. Study Four explored the concept of game style in field sports such as soccer. The aim of this study was to provide an applied framework with suggested metrics for use by coaches, media, practitioners and sports scientists. Based on the findings of Studies 1- 3 and a systematic review of the relevant literature, a theoretical framework was developed to better understand how a team’s game style could be quantified. Soccer games can be broken into key moments of play, and for each of these moments we categorised metrics that provide insight to success or otherwise, to help quantify and measure different methods of playing styles. This study highlights that to date, there had been no clear definition of game style in team sports and as such a novel definition of game style is proposed that can be used by coaches, sport scientists, performance analysts, media and general public. Studies 1-3 outline four common methods of measuring the physical demands in soccer: video based time motion analysis, GPS at 1 Hz and at 5 Hz and semiautomated multiple camera based systems. As there are no semi-automated multiple camera based systems available in Australia, primarily due to cost and logistical reasons, GPS is widely accepted for use in team sports in tracking player movements in training and competition environments. This research identified that, although there are some limitations, GPS player-tracking technology may be a valuable tool in assessing running demands in soccer players and subsequently contribute to our understanding of game style. The results of the research undertaken also reinforce the differences between methods used to analyse player movement patterns in field sports such as soccer and demonstrate that the results from different systems such as GPS based athlete tracking devices and semi-automated multiple camera based systems cannot be used interchangeably. Indeed, the magnitude of measurement differences between methods suggests that significant measurement error is evident. This was apparent even when the same technologies are used which measure at different sampling rates, such as GPS systems using either 1 Hz or 5 Hz frequencies of measurement. It was also recognised that other factors influence how team sport athletes behave within an interactive system. These factors included the strength of the opposition and their style of play. In turn, these can impact the physical demands of players that change from game to game, and even within games depending on these contextual features. Finally, the concept of what is game style and how it might be measured was examined. Game style was defined as "the characteristic playing pattern demonstrated by a team during games. It will be regularly repeated in specific situational contexts such that measurement of variables reflecting game style will be relatively stable. Variables of importance are player and ball movements, interaction of players, and will generally involve elements of speed, time and space (location)".

Evasive change-of-direction manoeuvres (agility skills) are a fundamental ability in rugby union. In this study, we explored the attributes of agility skill execution as they relate to effective attacking strategies in rugby union. Seven Super 14 games were coded using variables that assessed team patterns and individual movement characteristics during attacking ball carries. The results indicated that tackle-breaks are a key determinant of try-scoring ability and team success in rugby union. The ability of the attacking ball carrier to receive the ball at high speed with at least two body lengths from the defence line against an isolated defender promoted tackle-breaks. Furthermore, the execution of a side-step evasive manoeuvre at a change of direction angle of 20–60° and a distance of one to two body lengths from the defence, and then straightening the running line following the initial direction change at an angle of 20–60°, was associated with tackle-breaks. This study provides critical insight regarding the attributes of agility skill execution that are associated with effective ball carries in rugby union.

The split cylinder resonator method is improved for nondestructive and accurate measurement for low permittivity materials at multiple frequency points. The dielectric constants of flat substrate materials are calculated based on a rigorous mode match analysis of the TE/sub 011/ mode. The loss tangent is also approximately calculated. The dielectric properties of two commercial substrates have been measured at multiple frequencies. The results demonstrate that this technology is capable of accurately characterizing the dielectric properties of flat substrate materials versus frequency in a nondestructive way.

Children and adolescents mature at different rates such that individuals competing in the same competition may differ in physical and biological maturity despite being of similar chronological age. Whether or not differences translate into on-field performance in competition is relatively unknown. This study investigated the influence of biological maturity on fitness and match running performance in junior Australian football. Eighty-seven under-15 years players were categorised into early (n = 20), average (n = 45) and late (n = 22) maturity groups based on self-reported and anthropometric assessment of biological maturity. Running movements during competition were collected using GPS (5 Hz) technology. Early maturers were heavier and taller than all other boys (P < 0.05), while biological maturity was significantly correlated to 20 m sprint (r = 0.53, P < 0.01). Total distance, high-intensity (>14.4 km · h−1) running distance and number of high-intensity efforts were significantly greater (20.8%, 53.6%, 31.7%, respectively; P < 0.01) in early compared to late maturers. Number of sprints and peak speed in competition were not different. Pubertal development and maturity status partially explained the differences between players in physical size, functional running fitness and match running performance. Late maturing players in this Australian football under-15 age group were at a physical and performance disadvantage to their earlier maturing peers.

La Muay Thai, comunemente detta “Boxe Thailandese” è un'arte marziale che rientra nella classificazione delle attività intermittenti con entrambi i sistemi energetici reclutati, aerobico e anaerobico, è inoltre caratterizzata dal fatto che il combattimento alla distanza si alterna alla lotta, denominata “clinch”. Nonostante la popolarità della Muay Thai, in ambito mondiale, stia progressivamente aumentando così come è in aumento il numero di atleti che la praticano, le ricerche incentrate su questa arte marziale e gli studi relativi agli aggiustamenti cardiometabolici nonché alle modalità temporali con cui gli specifici gesti atletici si possono succedere nel tempo durante un match, sono ancora estremamente esigui. L’oggetto del nostro studio è stato l’analisi della struttura temporale del combattimento, tramite la Match Analysis off line (analisi visiva del combattimento), con comparazione dei dati ottenuti tra il vincitore (winner) e il perdente (loser) e la valutazione dell’andamento di alcuni importanti parametri metabolici attraverso la misurazione del lattato e della HR, durante un incontro reale di Boxe Thailandese. La sperimentazione è stata condotta su un gruppo di dieci soggetti di sesso maschile, praticanti la disciplina ad un alto livello nazionale, la cui media ± deviazione standard (DS), di età, peso e altezza è di 24,6 ±4,01 anni, 69,4 ±7 kg e 174,1 ±4,3 cm. Gli atleti sono stati sottoposti, in due diverse giornate separate da almeno tre giorni, a due test; durante una prima seduta sperimentale preliminare abbiamo determinato il massimo consumo di ossigeno (VO2max) nel corso di un test sul nastro trasportare, con concomitante stima della Soglia anaerobica (SA) e misura della massima frequenza cardiaca (HR max). In una seconda seduta sperimentale abbiamo effettuato i test di combattimento in palestra e infine abbiamo analizzato i video degli incontri attraverso la Match Analysis. Dai risultati della Match - Analysis è scaturito che i vincitori hanno eseguito un numero più elevato di azioni efficaci (p < 0,05) rispetto ai non-vincitori, grazie ad un numero maggiore di combinazioni (C ) e di attacchi singoli (A) e un numero minore di difese (D) e di tecniche inefficaci. È così emerso come il livello delle realizzazioni sia quasi esclusivamente dovuto all’efficacia della tecnica e alla tattica delle azioni. Abbiamo quindi focalizzato la nostra attenzione sul clinch e sulle azioni di attacco perché si ipotizzava che potessero essere attività dispendiose e probabilmente responsabili dell’incremento di lattato durante il combattimento, dall’ analisi dei dati però non è stata riscontrata nessuna significativa correlazione tra l’andamento dei dati metabolici e le fasi di attacco e di lotta. Dai nostri risultati emerge in maniera interessante come durante le fasi attive del combattimento si siano raggiunti alti valori di lattato ematico e di frequenza cardiaca, rispettivamente di 12,55 mmol/L e di 182,68 b/min, ben oltre la SA rilevata nel test incrementale dove la HR si posizionava a 168,2 b/min. In conclusione si evidenzia come la Boxe Thailandese sia una disciplina caratterizzata da un considerevole impegno energetico-metabolico, sia aerobico che anaerobico. La predominanza del metabolismo lattacido è dimostrata dagli elevati valori di lattato osservati nel presente studio e dalla frequenza degli attacchi (8,6 ± 3,5 sec.). Questo studio potrà essere utilizzato dagli allenatori per la predisposizione di allenamenti specifici che inducano gli adattamenti propri della Muay Thai.

The aim of this study was to assess the way volleyball teams score with regard to: whether or not they won the game, whether they were the home or away team, the level of the opposing teams, and the type of confrontation. The sample was composed of 118,083 plays from 794 men’s volleyball matches and 125,751 plays from 719 women’s matches of Spain’s first division clubs (from the 2002-2003 season to the 2006-2007 season). The variables studied were: the way points were obtained in each play, being the home or away team, the level of the teams, the result of the match, and the type of confrontation between the teams with regard to their level. The results demonstrate that for both men’s and women’s teams, the majority of the points were obtained in attack and by opponent errors. Differences were found with regard to the way points were obtained when winning or losing the match was taken into account as well as when considering the level of the teams. This paper discusses the differences found with regard to whether the team is home or visiting and the type of confrontation.

Over the last few years, football entered in a period of accelerated access to large amount of match analysis data. Social networks have been adopted to reveal the structure and organization of the web of interactions, such as the players passing distribution tendencies. In this study we investigated the influence of ball possession characteristics in the competitive success of Spanish La Liga teams. The sample was composed by OPTA passing distribution raw data (n=269,055 passes) obtained from 380 matches involving all the 20 teams of the 2012/2013 season. Then, we generated 760 adjacency matrixes and their corresponding social networks using Node XL software. For each network we calculated three team performance measures to evaluate ball possession tendencies: graph density, average clustering and passing intensity. Three levels of competitive success were determined using two-step cluster analysis based on two input variables: the total points scored by each team and the scored per conceded goals ratio. Our analyses revealed significant differences between competitive performances on all the three team performance measures (p < .001). Bottom-ranked teams had less number of connected players (graph density) and triangulations (average clustering) than intermediate and top-ranked teams. However, all the three clusters diverged in terms of passing intensity, with top-ranked teams having higher number of passes per possession time, than intermediate and bottom-ranked teams. Finally, similarities and dissimilarities in team signatures of play between the 20 teams were displayed using Cohen’s effect size. In sum, findings suggest the competitive performance was influenced by the density and connectivity of the teams, mainly due to the way teams use their possession time to give intensity to their game.

This paper investigates the implementation of a number of circuits used to perform a high speed closest value match lookup. The design is targeted particularly for use in a search trie, as used in various networking lookup applications, but can be applied to many other areas where such a match is required. A range of different designs have been considered and implemented on FPGA. A detailed description of the architectures investigated is followed by an analysis of the synthesis results. © 2006 IEEE.

Since turning professional in 1995 there have been considerable advances in the research on the demands of rugby union, largely using Global Positioning System (GPS) analysis over the last 10 years. A systematic review on the use of GPS, particularly the setting of absolute (ABS) and individual (IND) velocity bands in field based, intermittent, high-intensity (HI) team sports was undertaken. From 3669 records identified, 38 studies were included for qualitative analysis. Little agreement on the definition of movement intensities within team sports was found, only three papers, all on rugby union, had used IND bands, with only one comparing ABS and IND methods. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the demands within positions when comparing ABS and IND methods for GPS analysis and if these differences are significantly different between the forward and back positional groups. A total of 214 data files were recorded from 26 players in 17 matches of the 2015/2016 Scottish BT Premiership. ABS velocity zones 1-7 were set at 1) 0-6, 2) 6.1-11, 3) 11.1-15, 4) 15.1-18, 5) 18.1-21, 6) 21.1-15 and 7) 25.1-40km.h-1 while IND zones 1-7 were 1) <20, 2) 20-40, 3) 40-50, 4) 50-70, 5) 70-80, 6) 80-95 and 7) 95-100% of player’s individually determined maximum velocity (Vmax). A 40m sprint test measured Vmax using OptaPro S4 10 Hz (catapult, Australia) GPS units to derive IND bands. The same GPS units were worn during matches. GPS outputs analysed were % distance, % time, high intensity efforts (HIEs) over 18.1 km.h-1 / 70% max velocity and repeated high intensity efforts (RHIEs) which consists of three HIEs in 21secs. General linear model (GLM) analysis identified a significant difference in the measurement of % total distance covered, between the ABS and IND methods in all zones for forwards (p<0.05) and backs (p<0.05). This difference was also significant between forwards and backs in zones 1, shown as mean difference ± standard deviation (3.7±0.7%), 6 (1.2±0.4%) and 7 (1.0±0.0%) respectively (p<0.05). Percentage time estimations were significantly different between ABS and IND analysis within forwards in zones 1 (1.7±1.7%), 2 (-2.9±1.3%), 3 (1.9±0.8%), 4 (-1.4±0.8%) and 5 (0.2±0.4%), and within backs in zones 1 (-10±1.5%), 2 (-1.2±1.1%), 3 (1.8±0.9%) and 5 (0.6±0.5%) (p<0.05). The difference between groups was significant in zones 1, 2, 4 and 5 (p<0.05). The number of HIEs was significantly different between forwards and backs in zones 6 (6±2) and 7 (3±2). RHIEs were significantly different between ABS and IND for forwards (1±2, p<0.05) although not between groups. Until more research on the differences in ABS and IND methods is carried out, then neither can be deemed a criterion method. In conclusion, there are significant differences between the ABS and IND methods of GPS analysis of the physical demands of rugby union, which must be considered when used to inform training load and recovery to improve performance and reduce injuries.

This thesis is a documented energy audit and long term study of energy and water reduction in a ghee factory. Global production of ghee exceeds 4 million tonnes annually. The factory in this study refines dairy products by non-traditional centrifugal separation and produces 99.9% pure, canned, crystallised Anhydrous Milk Fat (Ghee). Ghee is traditionally made by batch processing methods. The traditional method is less efficient, than centrifugal separation. An in depth systematic investigation was conducted of each item of major equipment including; ammonia refrigeration, a steam boiler, canning equipment, pumps, heat exchangers and compressed air were all fine-tuned. Continuous monitoring of electrical usage showed that not every initiative worked, others had pay back periods of less than a year. In 1994-95 energy consumption was 6,582GJ and in 2003-04 it was 5,552GJ down 16% for a similar output. A significant reduction in water usage was achieved by reducing the airflow in the refrigeration evaporative condensers to match the refrigeration load. Water usage has fallen 68% from18ML in 1994-95 to 5.78ML in 2003-04. The methods reported in this thesis could be applied to other industries, which have similar equipment, and other ghee manufacturers.
